Semi functional 1987 300D for sale

Hey everyone,

After eight years I'm selling my 1987 300D Turbo (dark gray/black metallic) with ~260k miles. In the last 80k miles the following work has been done:

- Hoses and belts
- Belt tensioner shock
- Rebuilt front end with new struts
- Totally repainted in factory original color
- New rear shocks
- Rebuilt engine including new vacuum pump, camshaft, valves, updated cylinder head, lifters, crankshaft, chains, rails, and sprockets ... etc.
- Rebuilt transmission installed
- Dash pulled to replace vacuum pods and evaporator/o-rings and firewall/airbox gasket
- New tires, front rotors and pads, and alignment in November 2006
- Recent rear brake rotors and pads, and new brake hoses on all four wheels
- Approx 40k miles on Bosch remanufactured alternator
- Recent 30,000 mile service
- Power windows and pneumatic locks all work

- A/C compressor works and the system blows cold leaks over a season
- Climate control adjustment works
- Odometer is broken at 230k miles about 3 years ago (~10kmi/year usage since then)
- Sunroof cable is stuck, so the sunroof doesn't work

So why am I selling?

The engine has recently developed bad lifter noise on the highway and a bouncing oil pressure gauge at idle. There is smoky blowby coming out the valve cover, and enough oil drops from the breather to mist the cylinders with oil and cause excessive, continuous oil smoke when the engine is hot. Compression has been tested at 400PSI across all six cylinders. All the lifters make noise after the engine warms up but start out completely quiet after a cold startup.

This may be a straightforward issue or a more serious problem. As it is now the car is not driveable because of the smoke. The valve cover is off at the mechanic's shop. The mechanic, the one who rebuilt the engine, wants to pull the head and begin exploratory surgery -- at this point I have purchased a brand new vehicle and am reluctant to pay to fix it (the warranty expired a year ago), yet the car is not realistically driveable due to the smoke.

It's a fine machine with many new parts. It has been a joy to own (if somewhat expensive to fix) and may make an excellent parts car. Or fix the smoke and drive it another 80k miles.

The vehicle is in San Leandro, CA. Best offer gets it!

Justin Dobbs

Let me put it this way. If no one buys it in a week or two, I'm going to donate it. But I'd MUCH rather see someone fix it or use it for parts!

Talking Lifter noise?

Howdy,

Is the lifter noise a clatter/rattle sound or a knock?

I love my '87 300D and I would gladly take the car off your hands...
If the engine is DOA, a nice donor car with a good used engine could be a good project for a motor head like me.

Got any pictures?

Thanks, Kevin

So sorry, guys, for not following up to your e-mails. This hasn't been a
good week for e-mails!

Yes, the car is still for sale. $2k OBO gets it.

It's in the fenced storage lot at the shop in San Leandro, CA. It probably
cannot be seen over the weekend, because the shop is Monday through
Friday only. Let me know if you can see it during the week!

Justin

Has anyone heard from Justin on this? I've been trying to buy this car since late March, PMs and email go un-answered, would love to know if it's been sold or not.
