ISO: W124/W123 Touring, Gas or Diesel

Been a lurker here for a little while and have slowly been replacing my fleet with MB, originally collecting toyota landcruisers (FJ62, FJ60, FJ40, and FJ45). I've sold off most the cruisers except for my FJ62 workhorse that I will keep for my kids...whenever that happens

Now that I've finally put my paws on a beautiful 500E, my search starts for the perfect wagon.

I'm looking for:
W124 - Gas or diesel, low miles
W123 - TD < 250,000 miles

I'll willing to pay premium prices for the right candidate.
Please ping me at robert AT southernrecording DOT com

What's the difference between an FJ60 and FJ62?

Clearly you want to check with Neil (ke6dcj). He has a 500E or E500 and this 300TE with a C36 engine - http://www.silcom.com/~neilv/sportline/

Asthetically, the only difference is that the 60(83-87) has the two round headlights, the 62(88-90) will have four smaller rectagular headlights, two per side. The drawback with the newer rect headlights are that there are not as many options to brighten up the lights, not as much as there are with the older model rounds. The 62 comes with the larger and more powerful 3FE motor that was EFI, but can only be mated to an automatic transmission. The 60s came with manuals, and were carberated. Really, it's pick your own poison. There are folks that prefer the lighter, more agile 6 over the heavier more powerful hp 6 (3fe). Dash changed, suspension and diff ratio also changed. Otherwise they are identical and most parts are interchangeable.

Thanks for the link. Very NICE "360"TE he's got there. Kinda how I want mine to look with the lowered 'sportline' suspension and blacked out glass. Black ext is nice, but the 040 is SOOO hard to keep clean. Silver would be perfect, anything else acceptable. I did see a Signal Red one in my area that had mono II and a lowered suspension and if I hadn't seen it in person I would've NEVER picked that color....but it looked good!

It's increasingly difficult to find a nice 124 wagon. Shoot, they were all beat last time I looked, and that was almost 10 years ago. Have you considered this one: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=185435 It sounds very nice and appears to be near your location.

Yeah, I've seen that one.

There are two problems with this car:
1. More miles than I feel comfortable with, which usually isn't a problem with these tanks but I don't trust the records - see reason below...
2. This guys is a curb stoner. Not a private seller. He posts in CL all the time in GA, SC, NC, Southeast selling cars that he says he knows everything about. Sure, you know every little thing about the dozens of cars that you sell as a broker...yeah right. He may have a good record on ebay, etc, but it just stinks to me and I live life by trusting my instincts.

I'm not in a rush to buy so my patience is holding strong. Besides, driving around town in a FJ62 isn't too far off from how triving a touring feels on the road

Yes, these cars are hard to find and diesel W123 are harder to come by if not for a premium. But I'll say again, I will pay a premium price for a car that fits the bill.

Ah, he represented the car as his personal ride. Nevermind. I wouldn't bother with a curbstoner either. Good luck in your search.
