just fishing, is there interest in a 1974 280?

4-door sedan, dark blue outside and blue interior. 100K or so miles. Non original stereo from previous owner. Driver's seat recently reupholstered.

twin cam 6-cyl gasser with new(er) carb, starts and runs well. Have not had a chance to drive it for awhile, but since we may be looking to sell it, I plan to drive it to my house 300 miles or so from its current location in order to give you a better idea of its road manners and appetite for fuel.

Has all original smog equipment, eng compartment wiring needs a little help around the thermal reactors, otherwise a pretty straight example.

Is this a desireable car? If so, what's it worth?

Send me a PM and I'll send pix.

Please note this car is not yet for sale, we just want to know what kind of interest there is for on e of these. As you see in my sigs, I'm a diesel fan, and though this car is not what I would necessarily keep, it may need to be sold, but I want it to go to a good home (that's why you saw it here first).

A 114? Expect about 14-17mpg depending on how tuned it is. Nice driving on the highway. Steering gearbox mount is a trouble spot. Carb can be a real PITA - sometimes the intake will warp too, causing leaks.
There not one of the more desireable models out there.... but, like with anything...given enough time..

Larry,
Fortunately the carb is so new that the car idles extremely well. I also changed the timing from 6 degrees ATDC to 12 BTDC some time ago, and it really woke up the engine-- but it got smogged and the timing is now back where it was-- so, I'm gonna do it again if I get a chance to drive it home.

I'll check the steering box mount-this has been a Calif car for the last 6 years, before that I don't know, but there is no body rust that I could see.

Is the steering box issue aggravated by rust, or are there cracking problems that occur regardless of location?

The gearbox mount isssue is one of metal fatigue. Apparently a piece or two of steel welded on to the frame, and you're good to go.

I looked for a 114 for aa while before i bought my coupe (gone now) While I was looking there was quite a price range. i saw ones with visible rust go from $500 to $1500 and no apparent rust $1000 - $4000. They are great drivers but demand is not high.
From what I've read the steering box needed to be retorqued at regular service intervals, if it was not done, then their movement would shear the metal in the area. These were built before the era of low maintanance.
