selling '81 240d, Seattle

For my birthday last spring I bought a clk430. Haven't really driven the 240d since. It looks like it may become a problem, it sat there on the street all summer growing moss until I guess some jackass complained so then I had to move it. To it's credit after a solid 3 months + sitting there I went out and it started right up. Rather than fight with the city about it and potentially get it towed I've been contemplating and I think I would like to sell it to someone who might actually use it.

340,000 or so miles

What's right about it? Starts fine, runs fine. New battery as of about 2 years ago works great. Transmission replaced about 2-3 years ago with one that had 160k miles, or so they said. The EGR tube can't fall out again, we've plugged the hole. Oh, and I washed it a couple of weeks ago so it doesn't look like it's been growing moss for half a year.

What's wrong with it? You know the drill on something 25 years old. It has a 300d bumper. Shocks and struts? What are those? Sunroof doesn't open. Vacuum system leaks like a sieve, doesn't power door locks. Heater should work but blower doesn't since I refused to spend $170 on a reconditioned one and I dont know how to change the bushing which is what they told me was most likely wrong with it. I am not a mechanic or anything even remotely resembling one. I ran it out of oil right after I bought it in ... 1999 if I remember right, it's leaked oil since then despite us changing the main gasket. Other than poor fuel economy (12-13mpg) it seemed to weather that situation well, I've put 30,000 or 40,000 miles on it since then and there have been no major issues. Resonator broken off and in trunk. Damage to grill. Switches for windows long ago failed, one replaced with generic switch from Shucks so the driver's window will roll down. 2 hubcaps lost so I took off the 2 remaining and they're in the trunk. Shifts funny. It did that before at one point and eventually it went away. It's back to shifting funny, it's like the car doesn't like 3rd gear just goes straight from 2nd to 4th. I haven't driven it a long way and got it good and heated up to see if that would help in so long that I can't remember if it does. It could indicate something serious, or perhaps not. No way to know, that just makes it more exciting!! Some body damage pre-dating my purchase of it which we fixed for the most part with some 2x4s and the tractor. Driver's door still doesn't close quite all the way though, dont spray into the crack when you're washing the car or you'll have a wet driver's seat. There's probably more but that's all I can think of off hand.

I'll be the first to admit that this car looks like hell and has a bunch of things wrong with it. But it is very reliable. I would love to keep it around, as there is no way I could replace it for the little bit of money it's worth with anything even remotely as close to being as reliable as it is. But the clk is in my driveway, my work truck is in the street, and if the neighbor keeps complaining I am going to have problems eventually that just moving it for 3 days wont solve. So I'm trying to be pro-active.

This would make a great car for your kid, it WILL win in an accident unless it's with a cement truck and it wont go very fast so it's pretty safe. Except when trying to merge on the highway on an uphill onramp, those I avoid. Or if you want to teach your kid some mechanic-ing it would be good as it is very easy to work on. I have no mechanical aptitude whatsoever and I still managed to change the transmission with the book and minimal help from my father, mostly he sat in the chair and drank beer and heckled. It did take me 2 days and left me incredibly pissed off and with scraped knuckles, but the moral of the story is that if I can change the transmission that means that ANYONE can work on this thing.

I'm in Seattle. I really dont want to go to the trouble of shipping it. I would prefer a local buyer if any find this. I will probably post on craig's list also, once I take a picture or two which I will add here.

I have no clue what it may or may not be worth. So I'm going to ask $1000 for a while and see if someone wants it. If no one does I'll consider lowering my asking price.
