1980 300SD for sale

1980 300 SD
VIN.11612012016680
Brief history: I bought it from a retired Atlanta Federal Judge 9/16/07 at 155,400 miles. He bought it from a friend and neighbor 5/1/84 at 27,444 miles. What I learned from the 2nd owner. The miles are correct, the car was always kept under a car port, the transmission has never been out of the car and no major work was ever needed. The oil was always changed between 3,000 to 4,000 miles or once a year, I have the record.
Work since 9/16/07: All fluids and filters changed with the exception of the power steering filter and rear axle fluid. New Bosch water pump, hoses, Benz t stat, radiator removed, flushed, back flushed, pressure tested (perfect) correct Zerex Antifreeze used with distilled water.
New front brakes and rotors with complete brake system flush.
Condition of the car: My fourth MB Diesel and I consider it peppy. Starts right up at any temperature. Runs, shifts perfect. Steering is very tight, it handles flawlessly and is a pleasure to drive. No leaks on the driveway. Each of the doors shutting remind me of a vault closing, more so than my 126 cars. Always a Georgia car, the body is tight and solid. White with brown interior. All windows and sunroof work. The temp controls, defrost, work as they should along with a good heater.
What it needs: Reserve fuel light stays on, tach, cruise and AC does not work. The interior padding has slipped in a number of places giving the back seat a sagging look. (There is not a single seat tear to be found and the leather is supple.) The dash has 2 small cracks. The body has a number of dings, about 20. There are 2 large ones, on the front right fender and a deep scrape on the lower passenger doors.

Conclusion: The car is road worthy. If you call from the West coast I would tell you to fly in and drive home with no hesitation. The price is $4,125. Current milage is 157,451. If interested please call before 9:00 pm EST, 478-836-4343 or dssims@pstel.net. David Sims; Roberta, Georgia (100 miles south of Atlanta) Sorry I could not get the pictures to upload. I'll be glad to e-mail them to you.

With dents and no AC it needs about 2500 to fix an AC; and another 2500 to fix the body...........

That comes to 9125.

And no pictures ............I'll take it.

Your asking price is at least double what anybody here would pay, but I still wish you luck with your sale. Hopefully it will stay on the road with somebody......

This is a tough crowd. In their defense when a seller says A/C doesn't work most buyers will assume the worst so it might be in your best interest to at least try and figure out what is wrong with it if you have not already done so. If it is major, then yes, your price is probably optimistic. If all it needs is a evac and recharge then your price is more realistic.

You don't mention rust, but if it has any then forget it...rusty ones top out at $2500.

Yeah, this is a tough crowd.

Would like to see some pictures, lots of pictures. The AC not working is a big question mark. Could be a cheap quick fix or could be very expensive for a prospective buyer.

FWIW, about this time last year I sold an immaculate 1980 300SD with 142k miles and working AC for $6k and I think the buyer got a good deal.

Agreed. If my AC was not working and I could fix it I would fix it. Unless I couldn't afford to fix it...........

So if the owner can't afford to fix something, anything.........I assume there is plenty more that he also can't afford to fix.

So do what I did. Notice link says atlanta craigslist, so go to atlanta's craiglist. Type in 300SD and bingo right at the top of the list is one for $3,625. He must have added the (car & trucks) part as notice this correct link http://atlanta.craigslist.org/car/563078169.html

Small pictures, but looks like a gift to me. To the right person (I have to keep repeating this as part of my Mercedesoholic 12 step program.).

I have no idea what it's worth, but I like W116s, and this looks like a nice survivor.

Ah man, if my driveway wasn't already full of cars I would risk my wifes ire and drive down to see it. I've regretted letting my other W116 go since the day I sold it but just not the right time for another one.
Good luck with the sale.

OK A little progress.........How about actual pictures of the dents and dings

So we can see if they are severe or not too bad?

And really without knowing what the AC problem is I wouldn't touch it either.

I believe the buyer got a good deal. Too bad this place talked you down on your asking price. I bought a 1980 300sd last fall and immediately sold my same year 300d. $2500 to fix an AC? I bought a working climate control servo on ebay for $186.
1980 300SD's were the only year of that model to be made with German Steel. The first few posters are just mad because they probably own the far inferior W123!
