Unhappy 1975 450 SL White/White/Blue 107K Original

I have decided to purchase a friends 560 SEC so this is up on the block. I have a list of things that i can speak about, so all of you that are here that are interested I will answer all in detail and will also (this weekend) take a slew of pics of the car, the interior the roof and hardtop. This car has no records, as I purchased it from someone that did not know exactly what it was as it was given to them 3 years ago for a debt owed. The pic in my signature is the car BTW. I first saw the car under a car cover- that didnt't make too big a difference it was a mess. The paint is originally white but this is a cheap job that was repainted, and has lost that clear coat shine-hence a scuff and shoot base clear coat paint is required(or better). There is a tad bit of rust; the driver front floor has rust edging on the underside. The passenger has the same but in a different location opposite the drivers side. It is what it is. I saw it and decided a weld job with sheet metal would suffice when I got around to it; it wasn't falling out of the car if you know what I mean...next the car ran like ****. I know these 450's to have a bullet proof engine, and usually I have gone the fuel filter & pump, new plugs, and wires, and it is cured. Well that is the case. I curred it. But there is a slight miss that I have been told that is that it needs to be checked for correct timing. The interior is in 95% great condition, seats great no tears and not flat. The center console and the shifter cover needs to be replaced, as the cover for the heater/ac controls is missing. The AC actually works, and the compressor is in great shape. Does need freon though. This is 99% original and stock. The hard top needs the customary paint as well, but I cleaned the interior of it and it looks like new. As for the roadster top, it is in 99% almost new condition; it appears it was never used. I have the hard top off and the roadster top up and all the wrinkles have been ironed out and it looks fantastic. The mechanisims all work properly without any hassle for closing and securing the top or releasing it. Let me see, I have a laundry list of things that the car was going to go thru as I had planned on keeping her. The tires are new, and the bundts are all in fantastic no road rash scape shape. If you are serious, then i will go into details that you may request. I took the car out to miami beach from FtLauderdale (60 miles RT)last nite ran the car at 75-80 and it doesnt miss a beat, and drives straight with no cowl or rattles. It needs a new loving home, and you know the rest of the story... I will entertain serious cash offers, as I am not out to make a profit and a killing on this-just want to pass it on to a good MBZ lover in this community. Titled in Florida-Clear Title. In Hand. All lights, and fogs work properly too. Please let me know! Thanks~

I would be open for offers. the first reasonable one will be accepted. If you offer more than what I want I will be honest and set it accordingly. Know it sounds weird, but I do not want to discourage by price the car itself.

People set a price, other people decide if they want to pay that price. Hard to get too serious without that one small dynamic working. If you are offering the car at a fair price there shouldn't be any problems with stating that price.
Just my opinion.......

Im thinking about it actually. After I replace the Aux Air Valve, the Air Flow Sensor, Cold Start Injector, and the boot between the airflow sensor, along with a new flex plate and a transmission filter replacement and service, I will then have a better idea. It will be done by this thursday. I am next contemplating the paint shop next. It is fun fixing this car. Racing down the freeway to South Beach today, just makes me think of why I sold my last one. You guys are right. The value varies, and I am just gona say this car will be kept, and then passed onto someone else. Lot's out there, and I just got it for something to do between brain surgerys. LOL. I dont know im thinking something like 3500-4000 to be honest since it is would be offered here for around that. I'd go for 5500 on the classic auto trader and craigs list. I think I want this 560 SEC but am getting cold feet. I should just maybe look for a good E 300/400/500. Decisions. If I could find a set of Chrome Wire wheels with spinners I would never sell it! :0)

Hi Tim:

I was doing a search for SLs and found your threads about your recent questions on your 75 450SL, and then this FS post; ( Which now that I read it; I remember reading it when you posted.)
Anyways....Please give me an accurate and as comprehensive description of the SL if you are serious about trading for my 300CD. And some pictures too. I sent you like 40 pics of my CD.

You mentioned work on the rust and new paint or clearcoat. Was this ever done?

And what about the work you mention in this above post? Was this completed yet?

And any other issues the car may have.
I will do the same for you with the CD if you ask...."come clean" on what I know...
In the end I would want to take your SL to my mechanics here in Boca and at the same time offer to leave you my CD to check out anyway you like.

Please reply back to me here on the forum when you get this, and if you want to do something give me a call on my cell; 954-304-3360
Thanks,
Austin....

Hi Tim;

I am honestly not too thrilled with the attitude you seem to have, and the replies you sent to me via emails........so I am going to post them here hoping for a little more cooperation.........I know you are a real busy guy and this may not be a front burner issue for you. But you contacted me 2 weeks ago from my craigslist ad asking if I would consider trading my 83 300CD even up for your '75 450SL. And your reasons for refusing a PPI on your SL by a local mechanic still makes no sense to me. Maybe some of the other forum members can explain it better to me......

Here is my first email to you and then your reply. The other emails will follow in next posts....remember you contacted me for the trade...

Tim;

You were asking for 3,500 for your car and I was asking for 6,500 for my car.
.

I didn't know what you were asking for your car, but you knew what I was asking for my car.

So when you asked me if I was interested in an even up swap, you were aware that there was a 3000. difference in what I was looking for and what you were looking for. I wasn't.

Regardless if you are interested in the CD and I am interested in the SL, then please explain this because it doesn't make any sense to me........What does a local certified mechanic doing a PPI on your car have to do with how much is invested, and you being in the car business for many years?

".... I will not let someone in Boca go thru my car-sorry have too much invested in it for someone to not give it a clean bill of health-been in the car business too many years..."

Thanks,

Austin

Yea, right.

Judging by his the posts on the 450SL, IMHO his knowledge of mechanics is very limited. I wouldn't rely on his sole assessment of the car.

If I owned that CD, Ebay is the way to go. Prices and demand for a clean CD are through the roof and $6500 is almost cheap compared to what many are selling for. Parts are easily available and cheap compared to the Sl's due to their 123 inter-changeability and the vast number of 123's available for parts.

107's are great cars but when compared to the reliability and endurance of the 123's, they can extremely expensive to maintain and run. Too bad the CD's weren't produced in a convertable, that would be highly desireabe.

Angry My reply to yours

I really am not interested in any badgering about what I have available for sale. I spend alot of time in making my choices for purchases, and whether or not I am a master mechanic, it isn't the point. Do not infer that I am conducting anything other that honest description, and evaluation on my part. I chose NOT to have a stranger take my car anywhere they please is my choice. Not up to popular opinion. And if a diesel anything is more valuable that a gas car so be it- I have had my share. But I will try to be more close to my chest in dealing in a open forum where people can cut and paste emails which were marked 'confidential' and then utilize the parts that fits their position without merit. Do not try to slander me in this forum. It is something that I am sure will not be tolerated per my preuse of terms and conditions.
