Wanted - w124 500e/e500

Under 100k, known history, black or grey interior, well-treated, few mods, preferably southern car (no rust, in other words). Will pay a fair price. Let me know.

Possible Candidate

Hi POS,

I have a possible candidate for you. I have a 1992 500E with 78,500 miles, pearl black with gray leather. I have owned this car since 2000 and I think I'm the 3rd or 4th owner. The car had ~47K miles on it when I bought it, so I've put just 31K miles on it in almost 8 years of ownership. It's in really good shape--clean interior, nice paint, etc.

This is a great car, but I'm looking at Porsche 911s and can only drive one car at a time. If you're interested, send me a private message and I can send you more info.

I'm located in Ann Arbor, MI, about an hour outside of Detroit.

Thanks, Kirk. We found a 1993 in Houston with 47k miles on it - the guy bought it with 10k, all MB records, very well treated. We bought that one and are doing delivery on Monday.

Wow, nice find! What color ext/int? Options/aftermarket stuff? Do you mind sharing sales price?

The car is a 1993, the current owner bought it with 10k miles on it in 2004, he took excellent care and the PO took excellent care. It now has 47k on it and it's dark grey on light grey. All services at MB, including a new evaporator. Totally stock except for some 18" wheels which will quickly be removed.

I was solicited as a scout on this one. I have an MB friend of the past 25 years who drove my new 1987 300E 3.2 AMG. He loved that car so much, that he called me and said "I want a 500E. Can you find me one?" He used to own a 240D and a manual-tranny 300E, so he knows the Benzes well. He said he was dead serious, so I started searching.

I found the car on Monday and told him about it. He gave cash deposit on site after a short inspection. On Monday, he's taking it to my MB mechanic for a full inspection, then close the deal.

I currently have five vehicles, including three MBs - the 1998 wagon, the 500SL AMG, and now the 300E 3.2 AMG. Last thing I need is a another car! Besides, my 3.2 AMG might not be as "put together" as well as his 500E, but it sure is fun to drive and it's rare, rare, rare.

He probably would not want me to say how much he paid, but for a car of this caliber I'll say he paid way under value - the seller just didn't want to screw with the selling process. Win/win for everybody.

Just curious... why the fascination with it being totally stock? The stock wheels were undersized, and pretty plain looking...

That car had the suspension built by Porsche, and when Porsche set up the suspension, the wheels, tires, shocks, springs, and sway bars were all part of the math to make the suspension work best to the car. Change the wheels to 18s, you change the suspension and you change the math. Porsche knew what they were doing - why screw it up? To look good? Doesn't make sense to me.

Anyway, I usually prefer "stock" on collectable cars. The 500E qualifies; it so happens it also has a finely tuned suspension.

I'm with you 100% on this one.

A good friend of mine (who has since retired early to western Virginia) was an amateur race car driver and an engineer with Mitsubishi for many, many years.

He was one of a group of people who helped set up the handling characteristics of Mitsubishi's cars, at very high speeds, at a test track in Japan.

For example, he worked on the Evo cars, for many product cycles, even before they were sold in the U.S.

He used to explain to me how tiny changes in suspension geometry or changes in components, would make drastic changes in how the cars would handle, behave, etc. How when trying to refine one particular handling characteristic, after trying out the adjustment, some other part of the car would change, and the car would respond in an unpredictable way.

That is why I have always thought it strange that the 500E crowd is changing wheel size, adding strut braces, etc., without having any real understanding with what they are doing, and how it is changing the car as a whole.

While drastic changes to the suspension are not always a good idea (for example, RENNtech's ill-fated Heim-joint links for the 124 rear suspension), the stock wheels & tires are almost always a compromise based on cost and comfort. Mercedes put larger, wider wheels on the E500 Limited and the E60 AMG (17x8.25, to be exact, with 245/45/17 rubber). Did they consult with Porsche to get approval first for the Evo II 17's? Who knows. That said, the steering response is noticeably sharper with 18's on my E500, and the appearance is (IMO) drastically improved over stock. I do intend to leave the rest of the suspension near stock, except I installed Sportline front lower control arm bushings, in place of the softer stock items. I would like an E60 front sway bar but they're NLA from MB or AMG.

The whole collectible thing is a separate discussion... which I have mixed feeings about... so I'll probably just keep my mouth shut on that one.
