craigslist 1981 280E Philadelphia

I came across this, the poster claims they are rare in the US. OTOH, he thought a 280E was a diesel so he's hardly an authoritative source. In case they ARE rare, here you go:

Nice color and cloth seats!

I haven't seen any 280E's but I've seen a few 280CE's.

I wonder what they did with the sound system upgrade that would ruin the headliner.

Very odd, indeed. He bought it because he thought it was a diesel. Geez...

Now I'm actually getting curious. I need another old car like I need another hole in my head, but--were the gasoline engines in these cars good? How many miles would I expect them to go before needing a rebuilding assuming good maintenance? Would they require premium gas and what kind of mileage could I expect?

Talk to 280ezrider. He has owned his beautiful 280E for 17 years so far.
I'll bet he has some insight for you.

Ok, I got an email from the guy. It is automatic and appears to have 242,000 miles on the odometer. Dashboard is blue. Driver's seat has one of those wooden-bead cushions on it so I'd assume it's not perfect. Passenger seat looks good from what I can see. Front floor pads look good.

It does have large aftermarket speakers cut into the "kneeboard"--i.e. near the driver's left knee, and the front passenger's right knee.
He says it has a manual sunroof, no idea about whether a/c works.

He sent me another shot of the front, which looks good. But of course that's not where the rust starts.

Avoid that one - it's got 242k and been cut on. The 280E will last a good long while, plus it give much, much more power than the diesel while getting 20-21 on the highway. They're worth buying, but not that one.

280ezrider says they get 15 city, 20 highway.

I've got too many little projects to work on with mine, anyway.
