Angry My Car for sale and your replys

First, Opinions are like A--holes...everyone has them. Second, If I chose not to let someone take my car to a mechanic it is a right I have and will maintain. You can derive whatever you wish from that. My experience has not been positive. So it wont happen. And anyone who wants to buy a car can consider that in their choice. I have nothing but thanks for who has helped me in this forum. But if I as others ask questions, our mechanical experience cannot be gauged off the cuff. I am not a Mercedes Certified Tech, nor am I a Certified Master Tech. I just have friends that utilize the advice I receive when posting questions. So as for someone who wanted to get into a banter about this and that, I suggest that fair play rules apply. Bring who you WANT to look at the car-drive the **** out of it on the freeway-I could care less-but releasing a car to a stranger who then wants to take the car somewhere isn't gona happen. You do the math. Sorry if this is not acceptable. And that is all I have to say about this.

You have successfully gone from having a slim chance of selling your car on this forum to having absolutely no chance of selling your car on this forum. Congrats.

I'll make a couple of suggestions;

1) If you outright refuse to let a buyer have a pre-purchase inspection (PPO) by a mechanic you are telling them there is something you are trying to cover up, and it is a big turn off to a buyer (whether or not that is the case). In fact, one of the first questions I ask is if a seller is willing to permit a PPO, if they say no I typically pass on the car. If they say "yes, no problem" or words to that effect I tyipically will not even follow through with it as any seller willing to allow a PPO is usually sending the message he has nothing to hide and that is generally a good sign.

2) Nothing says you have to "let a stranger take your car". You can allow the PPO to take place while you accompany the prospective buyer to the shop or even meet them there with the car. Think of it this way, it is better to spend a couple of hours with a buyer serious enough to foot the bill of an inspection than to deal with the dozens of flakes, no-shows and tire kickers who won't.

3) Whenever I sell a car I always say "I encourage any prospective buyer to have the car inspected by a mechanic near me of his choosing prior to purchase and I will work with them to coordinate the delivery of the car". To date not a single buyer has taken me up on it and I have sold about 6 cars in the past 5 years. It's enough usually to be willing to allow it to put people at ease (the same as #1, above, but the psychology is of putting yourself in the buyer's shoes).

I agree - if a seller would refuse me a proper inspection - I'm walking away. Simple as that.

Thanks for the entertaining read though - I had missed the other thread.

Ron Paul in 2008.

I'm chilled, man, I'm chilled. Seems to me you're the one that posted a new thread calling attention to the situation and telling me I have stinky opinion.

I'm not agitated at all.....it's your car, do as you wish.....but don't upset when people bristle at your unrealistic stipulation.

Just who exactly "needs to chill?"

You can't find a mechanic who will do a "house call" any more than you can find a physician to. That, combined with the fact that any inspection that doesn't include putting the car in the air is like no inspection at all.

Wow, why so much hostility, Tim? Did you get burned by somebody or something?

Im not hostile. Who hasn't been burned before? But it is just ironic that I do not need to go for a mechanic's opinion, which doesn't mean anyone else has to; I take my thourghbreds to a pre purchase Vet, as I am concerned about the health. But to attack me for not wanting my car to go with someone whom I do not know is what this is all about-period. Some people are weird and some people are not. I am in the middle. The last time I took a car and it was to ALPINE JAGUAR in Ft Lauderdale Florida, a 1995 XJS Convert the car came back with 2 leaking injectors, the valve cover off the car without the gasket, and the AC would not blow cold. All for someone to see if this was a good car. Well it was before they screwed with it, took it apart, and didn't put it together correctly. So have I been burned? Sure, will it happen again? Never. That is Priceless.

Your personal heartache story would have been better offered PRIOR to the flipping out part. See, that makes sense. You got burned. OK.

But honestly, most knowledgeable buyers are going to want a PPI. It still doesn't mean you can't go along and witness the inspection.

Austin WAS interested in your car - I don't blame him for asking nor reacting the way he did.

Good luck selling your car though.

I forgot, we're dealing with Florida here...yeah, nevermind, it is probably best not to let anyone touch your car.

Been to a few Florida mechanics...'nuff said

Yeah, a little preface about WHY you feel the way you do would have made the rest sound a lot better. I guess I'd feel the same way if I'd had that happen to me.
