Sellers reply to my inquiries:

Well I bought the car from a guy in Florida spring of 2006 drove it home to Pa with no problems, after I got it home I changed the back cv axles (only because the boots where bad and it was easier and cheaper to replace the axles instead of just the boots) with axles I bought from advanced auto.
Then in 2007 I replaced the factory fuel pump primer with the newer version.
Just this spring I noticed the air conditioner pump bracket on the engine was broke so I had to just wire the pump out of the way just so it wouldn't brake anything else. The air worked last year so I did not disconnect the hoses.
It will need paint for it has faded being in Florida and I have sent more pics to show a little rust it does have.
It is a 1983 Mercedes 240TD (diesel) 254,000 miles, 4 cylinder non turbo, 3speed auto W/OD.
Manual windows with a manual sunroof.
I use it often in the summer, It is inspected ran out the end of April and I'm not going to renew it I have to many irons in the fire right now and something has to go, hopefully someone will buy it and have the time to bring it back to a fine car it was meant to be.
The rear suspension does not work, the previous owner disconnected it and removed some of the parts.
By the way this is a euro version car you can tell from the euro headlights and the bumpers.
And I have not converted to WVO but this would be a great candidate being a wagon there is lots of room.

Not sure it's an 83. It has the earlier style 114/115/116 steering wheel on it, which was changed to the new style in 80 or 81. Of course someone could have retrofitted the older style wheel.

Pity about the rust, a/c and rear suspension. The rust and a/c would be the biggest deal killers for me. I could live with it being an auto although that's not optimal. Really like the manual sun roof.

So what exactly happens in a W123 wagon when the rear suspension "does not work"?

Its probably converted to standard shocks, otherwise that rear would be dragging pretty low.

Did he have them hooked up to operate like the "SLS" or manually controlled?

He has since sold the car, but I'll ask. I think maybe he just did the "set it and forget it" route. I don't remember there being any controls for them routed inside anywhere. I know they did not raise/lower automatically.

Opinions

what's everybodies opinions on this car. If you don't care about the rust spot to much and don't care that it's a non-turbo. Think it would be something I'd have to sink a lot of money into in the near future cuz it's an automatic?

Newbie here, I'm a vetern at the tdiclub.com, as I drive a VW TDI for the past 6 years, and am a biodiesel fanatic...

I'd be surprised if it's still for sale. My thoughts if it is are as follows.

1) The fact that it's auto does not in itself worry me apart from the slugishness factor. You need to be able to live with that reality if you buy this car.

2) Probem with the a/c, but then I live in Phoenix. Other's might not care about it as much.

3) Rust. That would be my biggest concern frankly. It's not the rust you can see that's the prolem but what you can't. I'd be weary of holes under the windshield gaskets and behind the battry try where the fender meets the firewall etc.

Other than that I do like the simplicity of the 240D especially with a manual sunroof. Being in Wagon form would be a major plus from a practical point of view.

- Peter.
