Looking to buy: 90's E-Class w/ 4MATIC

Am looking to buy an E-Class with the 4MATIC all-wheel drive for a winter vehicle. Not too concerned about mileage - more interested in maintenance. Early 90's model? Would prefer a W124, but I suppose a 202 would be possible too. Looking to spend 5-6k with not a huge amount of up-front maintenance.

That's a very reasonable asking price for a late model W124. Where have you been searching?

That has to be a brand new 4 matic, those pre 1998 4 matics are the worst cars MB ever built, bar none, when the 4wd has a problem, you junk it.The market we have right now, should allow you to get a 1998-99 4matic,high miles, for 5-6k,in decent shape.

I'm negotiating right now on a 1998 E320 4-MATIC. 103k for 7,000. Looks to be in pretty decent shape, although seller states that a slight rattle below the hood at idle can be here. Perhaps a cat. convertor issue?

Water pump (bearings) maybe? If water pump not yet replaced will need to be soon.

Also, spend the money to have a certified mechanic who is familiar with Mercedes look it over. It will give you a better idea what if anything else is in need of repair, and can be used as a bargaining tool on the price.

My 4matic wagon was described as in excellent condition, and well maintained (ebay purchase) yet when I received it, it needed $7000 worth of miscellaneous work. The crazy thing was it had been dealer maintained by the book, and even had all the books stamped etc.

Good Luck
