Selling my 1997 Mercedes E-300 Diesel (137567K) North Carolina Car.I am third owner and I have "all" the mantance records. No Rust on Body or Frame. Exlant Condition Inside and Out. I have owned the car since 7/10/08. The car gets 30 to 34 mpg of fuel.The First Aid Kit has never been removed from the case.The Car is Moon Stone Gray with Gray Interior that is free of tear or blimish.The sun roof works great.'all" the gauges etc. work OK.I can provide pictures on request. How do you drive to get 38 mpg? Maybe at 55 mph with a slight downhill, I could see it. I get about 28 mpg in my '96 and that's mostly freeway.

Is the OD on the '97 5 speed, deeper than the '96's?

Slightly, yes. But the EPA mileage ratings are almost identical. In fact the '96 is slightly higher, strangely.

When I was last commuting in my '96, it got about 31.5 MPG overall with about 90% highway use. I would not be surprised at 33-34 MPG on the highway. The '97 has overdrive and a lock-up converter, so it should do a bit better. I don't know about 4 MPG better.

The seller doesn't qualify his MPG claims as being highway which is misleading. I am always puzzled by sellers who make claims like this who think nobody knows these cars, under ideal conditions *might* see economy like that but normally not. Especially not in winter. Just beware of sellers who make claims like this..."details" are not going to be their strong suit...caveat emptor.

When I bought my '98 it was also claimed to get 36 MPG by its seller. I have now driven it nearly 60K miles and I got 36 MPG on ONE tank, once, in summer, with the cruise set on 65 MPH the whole tank. OK, so the seller technically didn't lie...the car is capable of getting 36 MPG and I proved that but in 60K miles my average fuel economy has been under 30. Now that is reality.

Same year and model car, and on the highway, at 60-65 mph get 35-37 miles per gallon. I keep accurate fuel records, and also have a scanguage installed at all times to back up my figures. In stop and go traffic, mpg drop to 26-28. Have the car over 3 years now, and that has been the norm. If you are only getting 28 mpg highway, you either have a problem with your vehicle, or choose to drive with a heavy foot.

these are the figures for a 98 turbo, and mpg highway is listed at 34 mpg. The non turbo model will give you even more...

I'm thinking I should have waited and bought this car instead of my '95 non turbo which I paid $4k for with 262k miles, and will likely have more than $1200 in parts into it and an untold number of hours before it's "right" and at that point the moon roof still won't work.

That was my point too, but the OP implies the car gets that under all conditions the way he has it worded (as did the guy who sold me mine).

Around here if you drive 60-65 on the highway you are a hazard on the road. I only experimented driving down to NJ one time to see if I could actually get 36 MPG and did but I was going slower than 98% of the cars around me. In reality, in order to keep up with traffic and do 70-75 these cars will only get in the very low 30's and around town under that. The majority of the owners I have been in contact with confirm this and there isn't a significant difference between the N/A and turbo versions of the W210 in terms of their MPGs.

On the Garden State Parkway in Jersey, you could be doing 90 mph, and cars would still be passing you weaving in and out. Total disregard for driver safety and lack of concern for other drivers. Funny, when you drive in Virginia, Route 81, 95% of the drivers stick to the speed limit. Must be due to seeing a troopers car every mile or so, or is it just a coincidence???

Yes, it is regional and I have noticed the same thing in VA. They have very steep fines in some states - I believe in VA they start at $250 which probably explains why everyone drives the limit.

In NE 75 seems to be average if the speed limit is 65. At 75 constant my '98 will return about 31-32 MPG typically - maybe lower in winter.

In my opinion the seller's credibility is shot - he could have phrased it "The car gets up to 36-38 MPG" and nobody would criticize that but to say it "gets 36-38" leads one to conclude the rest of his claims are probably exaggerated too.

That's exactly what I get under those conditions. The 28 MPG that I mentioned is my combined mileage, with a small majority of the miles on the freeway, the rest on city streets. I see nothing wrong there.

His entire credibility is shot because of one poorly worded sentence!? Why not take a look at the car, get it checked out by a mechanic to see if it's a quality vehicle instead of saying, you exaggerated one thing, your car is a piece.

The OP is selling a car. Of course he is going to exaggerate on things. Nobody will sell a car if they say, It's a piece of junk, gimmie 10 Large and it's yours. Everybody in this world lies when they sell a car. Why are you selling it?...It's a great car, just got tired of it. No, there's a ton of work that needs to be done on it and you are washing your hands.

I bet everyone who has bought a used car before has had something on that car exaggerated. Just replaced the tires...15K miles ago. Never seen a winter, really? Driven by an old lady back and forth to church on Sundays.

Everybody exaggerates. No? Walk down the street and ask some guy how well endowed he is. Bet you everything I own he's lying.

Now, I don't know if the car get's 38 MPG or not. There is absolutely no way we can tell the quality of the car or deduce anything without seeing the car. Let's not worry about the MPG. Does it get 38 MPG? I don't know. Does it get good gas mileage? Probably.

What if the OP said it got 34 but has no records of it actually getting 34. It could get 12 because it's a junker. We are buying a used car, we don't know.

We are looking for a mint condition musuem quality straight from the factory 12 YEAR OLD CAR.

That's all I'm saying.
