Post Selling my 1980 300D--Many New Parts!

Hi. I am Joel Schermerhorn. I live at 46633 State Highway 10, Delhi, NY 13753. I am selling a 1980 Mercedes 300D 4-speed auto, non-turbo 4-door sedan with 218,825 miles for $2,500. The block heater on this car is insufficient to heat up the engine, and I wanted to get a different car instead, which I found already. This car needs a good block heater to start in cold weather below 40*F(often can start down to 30*F). There are a few rust and primer spots on the body, but overall is still in decent shape. The driver's side hood support hinge has rusted away from the body, yet the spring and support hinge on the passenger's side are still working. You need either a hood prop stick or push open the hood as far as it will go. When you go to turn off the engine, sometimes you may have to slightly increase the RPM's to turn off the engine or it will continue to run in the partially off position. The safety/backup light switch may sometime have to be replaced because it only starts in park(not in neutral), and the reverse lights don't work. However, I installed an aftermarket reverse light under the bumper with a lighted switch, but the bulb cover came off a few weeks ago in a low spot. In the attachments are 4 pictures of the car, and a repair list (& included uninstalled parts) of what I've done to the car already. Here's a link to more pics: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/vbpicgallery.php?do=hall&u=54575 . Or see more pics at http://www.geocities.com/jserman/_1980_Mercedes_300D.html
I have invested $3,400 in this car, but I will let it go for $2,500. The driver's seat may have to be replaced or repaired: seat has a rip in the center and some foam missing on the LH front corner at a 45* angle extending about 4-6 inches from the corner. Some interior trim panels came off the car when I got it, and will have to be put back up. Engine is still strong, transmission is good, but once-in-a-while transmission gets stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear until you shut-off and restart the engine(but almost all the time transmission shifts OK. Glow plug light works fine, but I found a short in the wire when replacing instrument panel bulbs. Trunk forms condensation and gets stuff wet in the trunk when cold or wet. Front doors close hard, and locks may need a little attention. Trunk lid forms condensation when cold or rainy & gets items in trunk wet. I want to thank you for taking the time to read this info. If you have any other questions, please ask.
Thanks, Joel

I have to agree with the other guys here Joel, that is a sub $1000 car. There is a '85 300 TD wagon is Syracuse for only $1500. Could you sell the car for $2500, possible, are you going to sell it to someone on here for that amount, no.

Thanks

OK, thanks, I did not realize. I went online & did research, but still couldn't figure out exactly what the value was and NADA.com didn't help me much with critiquing the price. Thanks for the imput, guys.

Well that's just plain silly. In the off chance that someone was interested, why wouldn'y you consider an offer?

Don't take your ball and go home, we were being honest, and nice about it. If you bring something to sell to a bunch of experts, critiquing should be expected. We don't buy junk, not to imply your car is.

I will state again my opinion that the classifieds section be exclusive to members with a certain number of posts and a certain length of time since registered.

That vehicle, in that condition, is scrap weight, $125 for the car, $7 for each wheel, $3 for the battery. Grand total $156. If that car isn't within 30 miles of the scrapyard nobodys going to waste the fuel to pick it up That's a typical car somebody had sitting in their yard for 5 years and donated it to a charity and it got sold at a salvage auction. That's a COPART special that scrap yards buy to crush. You think $800? You're being way too kind! The car barely starts in 40 degree weather, old, sick, no compression engine, and the transmission is shot. It gets stuck in a 2nd or 3rd gear while driving and you have to shut it off and restart it to make it shift again. Plan on stopping the car, because it doesn't start in neutral only park. Body is junk, seats are junk, bad engine, bad transmission, where is it worth $800? Scrap weight for crushing that's it! $156 thats it.

$2500, that's just silly for the condition that is in... That car may be good for parting, it going to take LOTS of money to get her going back to normal... So $500 is really the right price for it... I bought my 300SD for $750 and its in way better condition....

thats being a bit extreme

IF someone isnt willing to put the money in it to make it look good agian it would be a good parts car. my parts car was in about that shape and ive used many parts off it and saved a lot of $$
