FS: 1983 300D Wichita, KS Great Condition

I was planning to keep The Defiant longer, but an opportunity to purchase one of my dreams cars has popped up, and I need to sell off one of my cars to justify another purchase.

"The Defiant" as I have named it, is a 1983 300D Turbo Diesel. The previous owners had this car since 1992 with around 70k miles on it. About 5 years ago, the original motor was run out of oil, and a ultra low mileage replacement (less than 150k) was put in from a wrecked 300SD by a friend of mine and the local MBCA chapter club president. Shortly after, the PO quit driving it, leaving it parked in his garage collecting dust until I purchased it. It had not been registered since 2004. Its showing nearly 251k on the working odometer currently.

It only took a bosch reman. starter and good battery to bring this car back to life.

I have also done the following:

2 oil changes with Mobil 1 synthetic.

New motor mounts and shocks

New oil cooler lines

New oil pan/gasket

New fuel filters, intake and return lines

There are other little things listed in an ongoing thread documented here:

The Defiant in Drydock

Before the next owner takes delivery, I will also run the car on diesel purge, flush the green coolant, transmission, and bleed the brakes.

Cosmetically, the car is unbelievable, arguably better than Ol' Turbo. The car is rust free, with the original silver paint still deep and glossy. Clearly its been garaged its entire life, because the window seals and rubber trim components look like new as well. I'm still in awe that its the original paint job. There was one dent on the driver's side front fender, that I had popped out via PDR. It took care of 90% of the dent, and a new trim piece makes it barely noticable. The only other notable blemish is on the hood, which has a few dents and surface scratches. It looks like when the car was in mothballs, the PO rested a few things on there. You have to look at it at the angle to catch it, so its not that noticeable. I tend to nit pick, but I've only seen a few nicer during my trip to California. I also refinished the bundts so they look like new as well.

I still a little cleaning to do, so I'll update the photos later.

New Photos on page 2

The interior was preserved well with excellent window tinting, but due to the seat springs collapsing, the front seats were ripped. I replaced the interior with a fantastic MB tex seats from an 84, and it now looks just as nice as the outside. The dash is cracked, but has a matching fabric pad covering it up. The front floormats are embroidered with a metallic gold star symbol, and the rears 300D. I love the period floormats. The deep window tinting really makes a difference with the car sitting outside. The car came with an updated sounds system, but was missing the faceplate. I replaced it with a new CD player with USB and Aux. ports as well. It sounds really nice.

Mechanically, this car really shines as well. It is the strongest 617 I have ever driven, and that includes Turbobenz's 120,000 mile 85. It doesn't feel like a typical diesel, no lag, smooth acceleration and shifting. The tires will actually chirp on take off on smoother surfaces. Maybe its the differential playing a part some one, but it feels so much faster from 0-40. No smoke out the back either. The front end looks to have newer replaced rubber components as well, and handles excellently. It is also the best cold starter of the bunch, starting easily in single digit tempuratures without a block heater. I would not hesitate to take this car across country. The car no longer leaks any fuel or oil that I can notice.

I will post a video of this car running and driving in the next couple of days.

I still have some cleaning to do here obviously.

There are a some secondary issues the next owner will have to take care of at their discretion. The tachometer gets jumpy on acceleration and intermittently at idle, but is still functional. The left rear window switch and child safety window lock need to be repaired. The window works, but has to be lowered with the rear seat switch and raised with the front. The sunroof works, but moves very slowly. The windshield washer is missing the pump, and the power locks, cruise contol, and antenna don't function.

The biggest issue the next owner will have to take care of is the AC. The belt is off the compressor, and the main hose going across the engine was removed to make room for the previous improperly routed oil cooler line. I have a good nearly new compressor, and hose needed from a wrecked car with good AC to make the system complete and functional. Hopefully it will only need the compressor and fittings installed, and a througough servicing/ charge.

Since that is the only big IF with the car, I believe I have priced accordingly at $3250 for forum members. I'm willing to help whenever possible with shipping, and am willing to deliver the car personally to anywhere within a days driving distance for a plane ticket home.

I wish I came across this car 2 years ago before buying Ol' Tubo. But I have bonded and poured so much into that car that I couldn't bare to sell my friend. My 80 300TD was sold to another forum member, and I hope that this car will as well.

I may have missed a few good points, or other issues, so this thread will be continually updated. Another throughough cleaning, photoshoot, and video will be posted in the near future as well. Please PM me with any further questions, and I'm willing to speak over the phone about anything.

Thanks so much for reading; I know its alot.

Wow that car cleaned up nicely!!!! Just beautiful! I never really knew how nice the paint finish was, or the interior! Somebody will surely snap that up for that price. Nice!
Oil pans sure do look weird without dents and scrapes on them. I've never seen one without them.....

"Opportunity"????

No, the handle is on backwards, actually. Everything works fine there.

Check this out: 0-60 in the Defiant slightly uphill. The 1-2 shift is sooo fast, but a bit early for my taste. I hit the start button just as I stomped it, but it missed about a quarter second of it.

Please ignore the king in the background.

More photos: I concentrated on the areas where these cars tend to rust.

Rocker panels and fenders: Look great

Hood hinges and battery tray. The battery tray has some browning, but the hood hinges look fine. The 2nd hinge photo looks like rust, but there's some kind of dirty glue that's playing tricks with the camera. It looks just like the stuff you can see in the first photo. I double checked and couldn't see anything, but I'll look in better light tomorrow.

Door jams: The only one showing any cancer at all is the passenger front door, right by the circular plastic cap for the hood hinge. Very, very slight, but its visible in the photos. The rest is dirt. Sorry about the last photo, it was getting dark.

and Rear quarters... Just some rock chipping: Solid as it gets

Oh come on now, if it were slipping would it be that fast? That's not something I would speculate when someone is trying to sell their car.

I know exactly what slipping feels like, and this isn't it. Its not flaring either.

Look Here:

This car's shift may be more defined, but the acceleration is the same.

No way its slipping.

I don't want any doubts with people and this car, so I will post another video where the car doesn't break loose on road sand on take off and is not cresting a hill. I will also do some kickdowns just to prove the transmission is fine.

There is nothing to be concerned about there. I am not being deceptive, and have gone to extraordinary lengths to describe this car as accurately as possible.

There is no suggested visible evidence for your tranny assertion, and does a real disservice to the seller.

It was merely a question....and I figured it was probably a bad recording. Based on how it has strong acceleration by looking at the speedo, I am sure it shifts just fine. A slipping trans wouldn't allow a 14 second 0-60.

Sheesh.

Hear yee hear yee! I retract my dumb question about the car. It drives just fine! In fact, it sounds almost exactly like my dad's '83 300SD....which is an excellent driving car.

It looks like a beautiful car. And if I was going to buy a 300D, I would surely make that one my top priority....the condition is amazing.
