'72 280SE 4.5 (W108) - Milwaukee, WI - $1500 or best offer! (open to trades)
This is the only Mercedes I've owned, and it's been quite a learning experience, but the reality of my situation is that it's more of a project than I can accommodate presently.
I got it alarmingly cheap but put more money than I wanted to into a tune-up (I had wanted to wait until spring and do it myself - the city had other ideas and flagged all my unregistered cars as nuisance vehicles so I wound up having it towed to a shop) The good - It starts and runs quite well. The shop spent several hours cleaning the trigger points along with new plugs, wires, rotor, fuel filter, replaced a few sensors, I have the bill around here somewhere. All the glass is good, chrome is mostly good, many, many good parts. Interior is decent. Good brakes. Previous owner installed new exhaust. The bad - Rust, obviously. We bought it with kind of a "rat-rod" thing in mind. I think the photos linked below show the rust fairly well. Water pump has a small but constant weep. Power steering pump leaks. The spring that returns the throttle to idle isn't particularly springy anymore (this means the throttle is prone to sticking and is actually rather dangerous to drive in this state) It needs tires. HVAC levers are snapped off. Front window regulators won't hold the windows closed the last 1/2 inch. Yes, it's got problems. It's yours to decide whether this one is best used for parts or fixed up as a charming driver - it'll never win a concours. I'd like to get $1500 for it because that's what I've got in it, but I'm open to offers and trades (not even necessarily Mercedes, although I'd like a diesel W123 - I could also use a truck or even a newish MacBook Pro) The car is on the East Side of Milwaukee, WI, a block south of the UW/M campus. -Tim Hansen 262-325-0346 More photos: http://www.economysuperstar.com/1972mercedes/ |

Yes, same car. The difference is that it runs properly now. Again, I'm open to offers...

Is the frame rusted?
Which shop did the work? Black Forest? |

Since these are unit-body I'm not sure what constitutes frame rust. There is slight perforation at the forward top side of the sill/rocker panel (below the front door hinges) but it certainly doesn't look worse than anything else on the car. I took pictures of this; they are in the group linked to here
The shop said it seemed solid when they had it on the lift. The shop I went to was Matt's Motors out by 125th & Hampton. They're basically the one shop I've been able to depend on for all the weird cars I've had - he's got my Peugeot right now. |

Here's the photo that shows the rust I mentioned:

An update - I put $400 worth of tires on it. And I'm lowering the price, mostly since I'm having a hard time finding the title. Still runs and drives quite well but throttle mechanism gets sticky if it sits.
First $1,000 takes it. Let's get this liquidated. Tim Hansen 262-325-0346 |
