Looking for an interesting or project car

I am in the market for an interesting car, or a car that needs some serious work. The closer to the Chicago area the better. Let me know what you have.

1982 280SEL 5-speed manual very rare, 116K miles, owned by AMG of Denver back in the day and has the full getup---aero kit, recaros, wheels, suspension, etc. Needs some cosemetic love (front clip painted, minor bodywork to grille area), head gasket, etc but should come out great with $4K-$5K or so of work if you do some yourself or get good prices. TONS of service history too. Hell, you can sell the seats for $2000 on ebay, the wheels for $500, etc. Not sure of price yet, have to see what I have in it and what mechanic has in it. I figured it originally for a car I'd own at $10K after all work was done.

1987 190E AMG widebody V8 6.0 SOHC conversion. This is a crazy crazy car. Like a C63 back in the day. Custom engineered V8 conversion with A/c relocated, etc. All period correct AMG body kit, suspension, wheels, exhaust, etc. Only 28K miles. Needs engine work (or maybe change to 5.6 Euro motor), interior bits like headliner, some paint, etc. I'd estimate it needs $7K-$8K in total. I expected to own it at $20K when all was done. I also have a set of Recaro C's for it. Must have cost $200K back in the day, a no-expense spared conversion with all the authentic AMG gear. Have never seen another one like it.

1989 560SEL - 111K mile one-owner southern CA car with $12K put into mechanicals. Cosmetics are fair to good on exterior....$1K will do wonders for it (painting two doors and blending, reshoot bumper covers, headlight bezels, etc). Interior very good condition, needs detailing. Full top-end rebuild, t-chain job, lines, hoses, brakes, A/C, etc etc etc. I now own it for $16K. Maybe $5K??

Not sure how these fit your definition of a project car. Let me know.

Bruce

Okay this car needs AC and that's the biggy. 1978 240D, 4speed, less than 200K miles; comes with original sales sticker and some maintenance records. Asking $3500

I've got an 82 240D that has front floors half rotted out, surface rust spots on most of the fenders, and is basically stripped to nothing (but do have every part I took out). Is that serious enough work? lol

'82 300SD

It has recently occurred to me that, if I die when I ought to, I will leave at least a dozen major projects unfinished, and realistically, it would be wise to shorten the list.

Would you perhaps be interested in an inop 1982 300SD.

The good: Florida car, no rust other than one corner of the sun roof. 155K on the clock (had 145K when I bought it). Tires @ 75%, AC works, as do all accessories including windows & roof, interior fair to good, no major issues (hate to say excellent, it is 24yrs old). New parts installed include: vacuum pump, engine shut down valve, windshield washer pump, wheel bearings, glo-plugs and relay, belts, fuel return lines, aux fan. Parts in the trunk include a new rear window gasket and a 247 rear end.

The bad: slight dent/crease in drivers side rear door, po must have been too close to something, bumper trim is slightly misaligned on same side.

More bad: started losing oil pressure, I shut down at 1 bar idling (had previously idled at just under 2), and trailered it home. There was no knocking, just excessive clatter from valves due to the low pressure. I pulled the pan but that was as far as I got; Reinstalled the pan and car has been sitting since (August 2005). Needed the storage space and pulled it out of the barn last fall. Could be a simple fix and is overall a decent car.

I am open to offers, pm me and I will send some photos.

Jim

Bad news is she is a California car, so you would do a bit of travellin to get her.
Good news is she is a California car, so as solid as the day she was born. Never saw a winter or salt.

She would make the drive just fine. Does need some lovin (see thread link).
Perfect candidate for renewal.
