Runs and drives for $350 seems pretty good ... wonder if there's something else drastically wrong. If I had more time, I'd drive down just to take a look. Would love a stick 190!

WOW! I'm driving a "historic" automobile. Didn't know that. Headlights on this one swapped out. If this ad is for real, its a pretty good bargain, if at least as a parts car. If it were is SoCal, and I had the garage space, I'd snap it up, strip it, and keep what's worth keeping before junking the rest.

back off back off

I have been in negotiations on that car for 3 days now. There is a 50% chance I will go get it today.

The problem is it might be too nice to rip the transmission out like I want.

If my w124 tranny will go back in the W201 then I guess I would resell it as an automatic 190D

Nothing like an adventure than a 4 hour drive in $350 car.

ya I bought it.

Filled it up, checked the flex disks and drove it 4 hours back to newport news. NO problems at all. Minor body damage at the left tail light. Nice dirty tan leather seats. Newer c class wheels with decent goodyears. First aid kit, TOOL KIT. Everything works except one window, radio(missing fuses), a/c. It's VERY SLOOOOW but once your moving it's fine. I do not think it has been driven in a long long time. 226 miles and the fuel gauge went from full to two needle widths below 3/4. Odometer does not work but I get the impression that the fuel milage was... well dream like.

I might seriously have a problem pulling it apart for the 5spd stuff. I will get pics asap and post them. At 6'7" I am WAY too big for a W201

PS..

I found a metal plate in the glove box with an owners name, vehicle information, etc on it. Kinda like maybe it came with the car new. Any ideas? Because the title name matches the name on that plate... one owner?? The outside temp gauge reads in celsius.. whats up with that?

The metal plate is issued by Mercedes Benz to the original owner.

I don't know exactly what it was used for, but it looks like it would be some kind of stamp to be used with ink or a press to make a mark on paper. Maybe something to do with service paperwork?

So I think you found a one-owner vehicle.

What kind of place sold the car? The pictures make it look like it was on an auction lot or junk lot somewhere.....

That's exactly what the plate was used for...service work work-orders or anything dealer-paperwork wise...it kept the paperwork orderly and the handwriting guesswork out of the mix...

It worked exactly like the old MasterCard/Visa card squishers the Dept. Stores used to have at the checkouts...drop plate in squisher, drop charge slip in place over plate, slide squisher over the mess, out would pop the paperwork, plate is handed/stored with owner/car and away you'd go...empting your wallet at the cashier's window...

I still have the plate and books from the 1st O of my unit...HISTORIC!

sold by a "buy here pay here" lot. Typical lot of 10-15 year old cars. Very limited on space and he said they were tired of looking at it. Nice enough guy, said he had been selling cars since 1948. Shook his head when I told him I was driving back to Va right then and there.

Very cool, congrats on the purchase. I'm a little jealous.
I have the plate from my 75 240D, with my dad's name on it. It's in much better condition than the rest of the car.

historic

All it means that in MD you can get historic tags for a car once it is 20 years old. It means you don't have to get an inspection, but you're only allowed to drive on holidays, to and from the shop, and to and from car shows and the like. Some people drive daily on them, but I doubt they can do it for very long. My CE has historic tags right now, but I just got it inspected and will change to regular tags soon.

You were negotiating on a $350 car for 3 days? What did you end up taking it off the lot for? If there was a "paperwork" fee I'll bet it was 25% of the price of the car.
