FS: 1986 300SDL w/167,000 miles
Before advertising this more broadly (to the Craigslist tire kickers or whatever I end up doing), I thought I would take six weeks or so and advertise exclusively on this forum. My thinking is that this is where I am most likely to find intelligent and knowledgeable prospective buyers. Ideally, I want to dialogue with people who know these cars and to sell to someone who is able to appreciate an SDL. In the description and photos, I have tried to provide all relevant information. But I am certainly glad to answer any particular questions forum members may have. Certainly feel free to send private messages on ask questions on this thread, but the best way to get a quick response is via email or phone.
FOR SALE 1986 Mercedes-Benz 300SDL Black with Grey Interior Engine 603.961; Chassis 126.125; Transmission 722.321 VIN WDBCB25D6GA263496 Approx. 167,000 miles A Wonderful Opportunity for the Mercedes Diesel Enthusiast! A Classic S-Class Sedan with Character and Soul! Well Maintained and Rust Free! Location: Near Providence, RI Price: $5500 Contact David at 972.523.1743 History: A good friend purchased the vehicle in 2005 with 137,000 miles on it. Owner previous to him had had it serviced at Mercedes dealer. My friend drove it moderately (about 500 miles per month) and kept it garaged. I acquired the car from him in 2008 with 155,000 miles on it. Before he sold it to me, he had it examined by the Doylestown, PA Mercedes dealer and replaced the steering damper and an idler arm bushing. The only significant outstanding item when I took possession was that the car needed new tires. I have maintenance records back through 2005, but nothing prior to that. Maintenance: Upon purchase, I had the car looked over carefully by two different and very reputable independent Mercedes techs. Since my daughter in Virginia was going to be using the car, I wanted to make absolutely sure to do whatever I could to make sure the car was safe and reliable for her. Also, I wanted to do whatever I needed to do to promote the longevity of the car, since I originally intended to keep it forever. In effect, I did everything the techs told me I needed to do that had a bearing on safety, reliability, and performance, but let some other items go (sunroof, clock, exterior temp gauge, cruise control). Thus, within the period of a month (July 2008), the vehicle was carefully looked over by three technicians. I think it’s significant to note how many times the car has been carefully examined in its recent history. Upon purchase, I did the following (all parts OEM): • New tires (Bridgestone Turanza LS400) • Oil and filter change using Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W40 Synthetic • Transmission fluid and filter replaced • Power steering fluid and filter replaced • Air filter replaced • Brake fluid replaced • Coolant replaced • Fuel filters replaced • Driver’s seat frame replaced • Wiper blades replaced Since then, the car has required the following: • Monovalve replaced • Transmission front pump seal resealed (fluid and filter changed again) • Turbo replaced (oil and filter changed again) Needless to say, it was no fun to shell out the money for the turbo and the front pump seal. At least the next owner won’t have to worry about these for a LONG time! Condition/Performance: RI safety inspection August 2008, valid for two years. 28.5 mpg highway mileage (on recent 550 mile trip from VA to RI). All major systems in excellent working order. In particular, engine, cooling system, transmission, climate control, and suspension all performing to high standards. Tires are in excellent condition; they still have the vast majority of their tread life remaining. Every time I’ve had the brakes checked they’ve been fine. AC has been retrofitted to R134a. Exterior/paint is excellent…amazing, actually, considering the age of the car. Photos were taken shortly after washing and waxing. The paint looks great as is, but the car has not had a professional complete exterior detail and I wonder what impact that might have. Interior is overall good but not excellent; there are a couple of front seat rips (see photos to get a sense). There are some narrow cracks in the dash which I filled in and color matched, but I have an SDL-specific (shape and color) dash cover than can be installed by new owner if desired. In terms of the functionality of the seats, they are in good condition (have retained shape, are comfortable, etc.) but do squeak a little. Comes with all original manuals and accessories and two keys. I also have book of engine/chassis/units schematic diagrams for the 126 models. Photos were taken without mats, but I have all four Mercedes mats and they are in decent condition. Items Not Operational: • Sunroof needs new motor • Clock doesn’t work • Exterior temperature gauge doesn’t work • Cruise control doesn’t work—this may just be a matter of the lever on the column, which is loose. Or it may also involve the cruise amplifier and/or actuator….I haven’t had it diagnosed. In my pricing I have attempted to take account of the fact that the car is in excellent condition in many respects but that there are certainly some issues that could be addressed. Why Am I Selling This Car? This is a great car and I want with every fiber of my being to keep it. So why am I selling it? I found a mint condition 1991 300D with 77,000 miles on it…I just couldn’t pass it up. So, now that I now own three MB diesels (in addition to two Hondas!), I need to sell one (or so says my wife). Since the pair of 2.5 Turbos I own work better for our family, the SDL, unfortunately, needs to go. Note re Photos: Since I appear to be limited to five photos per post, I am going to post the remaining photos via separate posts. My apologies in advance to the moderator if this is in violation of any protocol...let me know if there's a better way to do it. You know, you can attach pictures to each post rather than in separate threads
Anyways. That is one beautiful car!! My utmost favorite color combination. I'll say it though....for $7500 there should be 0 things wrong with it. (including interior, sunroof, cruise...and the other things mentioned....etc) All in all, that's one heck of an SDL!!

When I was adding attachments, it said each time I had reached the maximum of 5. My apologies for any inconvenience.

I tried to think through the pricing pretty carefully and realistically. Rightly or wrongly, I really think that someone who wants an SDL and finds one in mint condition with absolutely nothing wrong with it would be willing to pay somewhere in the $9-10,000 range, especially with the paint in such good condition. I know I would if I were in the market for an SDL.

If you're patient enough I'm sure the right buyer will come along. It is beautiful, and maybe a little sweat equity fixing the little things and repairing the seats will help it sell faster. I was shopping for a SDL not long ago, and mint ones were selling in the 5-6k range, a 20-30% drop from a few years ago. Sold Ebay listings and CL ads corroborate.
You are in an area where a rust free chassis may carry somewhat of a premium from what I've heard. Its also the most desirable color, and has been taken care of better than most MBs. So you may find someone locally. Now that I've confused and contradicted myself, I guess I'll just close with 'good luck'.

I've always wondered about that....what things to fix, what things to let go. Same thing with selling a house. My thought was that anyone who buys an SDL knows what they're dealing with, knows what it will cost to fix things (depending on DIY or not), and factors that into what they're willing to pay.

Here's a little something from someone who gets the "magic" of the SDL.
http://www.automobilesdeluxe.tv/turbo-80s-to-the-max-headroom-benz-300sdl-commentary-period-pics-to-match/ Need people to think like this so they'll pay more for my car!
