Maybe a silly question..
I maybe posting this in the wrong place...forgive me
When a vehicle is purchased in a different state than you reside, how do you register and get tags for the vehicle in order to drive it home? I really do not want to trailer the car and I wouldn't think the seller would send me the title without payment. My state requires the certificate of title and proof of residency for issuing of tags and registration. I'm sure this varies from state to state. My state also has temporary tags that are issued by dealers. I'm not sure Joe Shmoe can get temp tags. I need some ideas. |

In my state you can go to the dealer with a signed title and get a temp. tag. This gives you time to get the car inspected.
The seller may also be generous enough to keep his tag on the back just to get the car home, then you mail it to him. I have done this, and insisted on insurance verification, and kept mine on there just in case.

You could also go to the local DMV and get a temporary tag.

If you are definitely buying the car get VIN from seller, put it on your ins.
Get a signed bill of sale from seller with your ins showing it insured and drive it home. I did this from Ga to PA got stopped twice. Once i showed that info they let me go.

I also was thinking I could take a plastic blank white license plate and write in black "tag applied for". I wonder if that would be okay too or would that just draw attention? Technically the tag would not be applied for. |

The term is "In transit" meaning you are transporting it with insurance.

tags
I bought a 240D in San Antonio, drove it back to Chicago with no tags, bought a 300TE in Dalllas, drove it back to Chicago with expired Texas tags, bought a 560SL in Scottsdale. drove it back to Chicago with a temp that the dealer gave me, never had a problem, just called my insurance broker with the VIN before I hit the road. When you register the car in Illinois you have to pay for title transfer, new plates and bull **** sales tax!

I always take one of my plates and throw it on the new car till I get home. My insurance will cover me on any new car I buy for 30 days until I contact them and have it formally insured.

A signed off title and a bill of sale and proof of insurance will suffice.

I just recently did just what you're asking about...
NY State: Owner has vehicle. I wanted to drive it home to Wisconsin. #1.) Called the NYSDMV (New York State Dept. of Motor Vehicles) and asked about buying and driving a car from their state to another... They said I needed a Vehicle Transit Tag ($12.50) and proof of insurance to get it out of state... So... #2.) I got the VIN, then called my insurance agent... #3.) I got a "Certificate of Insurance" and an "Insurance Binder" from my insurance company with the VIN on it...to show the proof of insurance...make sure it's not just the card...you'll need the sheet that shows the agent, agency, insurance company and coverage limitations...you'll need that in the vehicle as you're driving it from the state of purchase and through any state you're traveling... #4.) Once the sale is complete, make sure the original owner receives his plates back, then immediately, make a b-line for the local DMV and get the transit tag and appropriate paperwork...stick it where they require it and you're good 'til you get home. NOTE: The "in-transit" tag is time-limited. Make sure you get your state's tags on it before the time expires. On the way home, while passing through Chicago on I-290, I had two of Chicago's Meanest shouldering me with 4MW spots on me...once one of them spoted the "In Transit" tag on the left-rear of the rear window, all went dark and they turned around and rousted someone else...THANK DOG!!! All they saw was a Benz, speeding through the night, westward bound for the hinterlands and no plate on the tail...for all they knew, it was a "hot" one that hadn't been reported yet...the tag showed them otherwise and I wasn't standing on the side of the highway wondering what my life would have been like if I had been taller or whiter...
