For Sale 95 E300D $1,600 --engine problems
'95 E300D. Located Las Vegas, NV
Has a broken valve (I think). Last night on freeway started making a knocking sound, began losing power, I pulled off freeway, it shut down. Will turn over but makes a terrible scraping/shrieking noise. I assume the worst. Sounded like a rod or broken valve, or jumped timing chain. Prior to this ran great, no oil burning, 28-35mpg. 258,000 mostly highway miles. Here's what I did to the car during the last 12 months: New Bilsteins HD struts New Meyle uprated strut mounts New Bilstein HD rear shocks New belt tensioner assembly w/idler pulley New Pierburg Vacuum Pump New Meyle uprated engine mounts New rear differential mounts New flex discs in driveshaft New HD brake rotors (all 4) and pads Brand new general Altimax HP tires New steering center link New steering shock New coolant resevoir Trans. filter & fluid and much more that I can't remember right now. Before I bought it previous owner had just done: New Behr factory radiator New A/C compressor (A/C is Ice cold--even in 110 degree Las Vegas summers--no overheating) New fan clutch Transmision was fine--no leaks, slippage or surprises. No leaks of any kind Perfect rust-free desert car. Nice interior, no dash cracks whatsoever. e-mail me at mcashnv@gmail.com Last edited by lvbizbroker; 12-26-2009 at 09:02 PM. |

I'd take it to a mechanic before writing off the engine.

om617 engine in it?
this is probably a stupid question, but anybody know if an OM617 from a 300D can be put in this? My engine and all mechanicals are great; body needs TLC! Thanks-

With enough time and money, you can do anything. But, since the W124 never had an OM617 in the chassis, the time and cost would be substantial.

lvbizbroker,
So, Now it will not Start at all? I see no mention of a Timing Chain replacement... Like the W124 ? (What's not to like?) [You'd spend almost $60K for a "NEW replacement Mercedes,And it would only be suitable for transporting Fine Aged Horse Turds (During Daylight Hours) ] WORST case is a Metric Engine 4 Years/50k Warranty ,for slightly less than $10K http://www.mercedesengines.net/products.asp?cat=44 HOWEVER, I believe Moon161 has the Correct Priority suggestion for you!

Can't invest $10k. I can buy a wrecked 95-99 E300D for $1500-2000, if I am patient.

'There Ya Go !
We'll pray for one with less than 100K on the Odometer. (I waited almost 3 years, to find an engine. '10K miles on an official Mercedes reman, for less than $2K)

I don't think a 617 would fit since the engine in your car is slanted over so it will fit under the lower hood of your car.
The better question would be will the motor mount arms on your engine fit a 617? Would the oil pan from your car fit a 617? Will your engines' valve cover fit a 617? Would the 617 then bolt up to your transmission? There is also not as much room length wise in your car, so you might have to convert to a single belt set-up. I am not sure if this would be the biggest challenge of all. I don't have the answers to these questions. Anybody out there that does? |

Brian was far too kind. I'll dispense with the pleasantries: Installing a 617 into a 124 is sacrelige and a great way to make the car worthless. The 617 is a dinosaur compared to the 602/603, let alone the 605/606. Even if it were possible to stuff a 617 into a 124, you'd end up with a noisy, leaky, slow E300 that was front-heavy.
Back to the other swap question: Yes, you can install the 98-99 OM606.962 into the W124 chassis, but it will require a fair amount of custom work, and also a custom built injection pump (603 pump with 606 elements) if you want the full power of the 606 engine. Zeitgeist is currently working on this exact swap in his 1987 300TD. Details are in this thread. To install a front-mount intercooler similar to the factory setup, either an AMG bumper is required, or an add-on cover piece like Casey used. A small side-mount IC is another option but it would have less capacity than the factory unit, and would limit how much power could be produced safely. The problem is the transmission. Bolting the 606 up to a 722.3 tranny is relatively easy, but the high torque of the turbo engine might eventually blow up the weaker 722.4 tranny used in the 1995 E300, especially if power is turned up anywhere past the stock 174hp. You can't easily install the 98-99 electronic 722.6 five-speed transmission into the W124 unless you transfer over the entire W210 computer system & wiring harnes for the engine, transmission, and probably everything else too (ABS, cruise, etc). Using an aftermarket tranny control unit (TCU) to make the 722.6 work is possible... but it will cost a bundle and require hundred of hours to program the shift map from scratch. Bottom line: I would put either a 603 or 606 turbo into the 124.131 chassis, use the original transmission until it blows up, then replace it with a 722.3 tranny if/when the 722.4 dies. Why not just repair the engine, or swap in another 606 non-turbo? There are a number of used engines available for <$2k, including a couple of low-miles ones. Swap the motor, keep the old one for parts, and drive it another 250k. Last edited by gsxr; 01-05-2010 at 07:14 PM. |
