I have been also been looking for one that fits your criteria. You gotta move quick on these when they do come up for sale. Ford has a few forums you might monitor and Powerstroke forum. Good luck in the search. Jim
Will never touch a 6.0L again. I did once and lost my shirt big time. there's far too many problems with the heads to even play with one. I've personally had one detonate in a bus of mine, and it had a newer head that was supposed to alleviate the issues...

In retrospect, I'd have no problem buying a 6.0 Excursion, reasons why; quieter, about a 10% mpg increase over the 7.3.

If you will recall, the 7.3 had problems/issues/kinks to work out of it, and that took a few years. So, went the 6.0.

Even though I own a 7.3 PSD, I'd have no problem buying a newer 6.0 used, if a diesel Excursion was what I had my heart set on.

Yes, but the 7.3 was out several years before they put them in an Excursion. I think most of the kinks were addressed before they dropped them into an Excursion.
From what I have researched, the last few years of the 6.0 were pretty good motors. I think a 05 Excursion with the 6.0 would be the cat's a@# but they are not cheap. Jim

I've driven this one. The guy's been trying to sell this one for the last 6 months or so. It's got the 5.4 gasser in there but it's low miles and I think he told me it has had 3 transmissions in it. It's not a bad truck for the price. He'd probably jump on $7.5K cash. I am still kicking it around. A little TLC would get it sweet again. Jim

Big Jim,
I drove a 1980 Lincoln Town Car I bought new to 269K miles - and had not one problem with the overdrive 4-speed transmission mated to a 351 V-8. My 2002 Ford PSD 7.3 E450 has the auto trans. with overdrive - not one problem with it in 65K miles. I just have not had Ford tranny problems with the two Fords I've owned.

To the OP:
If you were burnt on a 6.0 - I don't blame you. Once burnt - ya never want another one, I understand that.

One thing I would like to say; now this is just me - I looked at a few of the linked to Excursions used from that dealer in Florida - what I would not buy - and this is just me - was one with the off-road look - jacked-up with oversized knobbie tires on it - that you know was probably thrashed by the previous owner. Maybe it's just me, but I would want to try to find one that had gentle around town usage - been used by a soccer Mom, and for groceries, a 4X4, but not one that has had the holy ***** beat out of it.
Try to talk to the previous owner on the phone as how it was used - before inking the deal.

When you're looking at one - look for signs of hard usage - did it pull a heavy trailer as a work truck - look under it for damage - look to see if it has been straight-piped with muffler cut-off - that's a sign the guy beat it to me - look for paint scratches - light ones where it might have been used off-road. Look at the front grille and paint - has it been pitted like crazy - look at the radiator - has it been run down the highway for a jillion miles and is full of bugs and dirt-grime.

And last - only buy one with a CARFAX on it to help verify the actual miles on it. Try to find one that hasn't been doctored and touched-up - because it was beat in it's previous owner's hands.

I have a 2000 Excursion with the 7.3, 3.83 and 4WD. Beast gets around 13-15 cityish. 16 at constant 70 mph. 10-12 towing my 26' mallard camper on the flat lands of Ohio. I have seen over 20mpg on same roads with cruise set at 65. That engine really hates RPMs. RPM goes up and MPG goes down. Really needed a fifth gear. Oh, and it weighs way more than 6000#s. Closer to 8 than 6 when my lard butt is sitting in it.

Aqua - That sucks bigtime! I almost refuse to ink a deal OR negotiate on a used vehicle unless I can see it in person. That's part of it, unfortunately Aqua.

A buddy of mine is looking at a 1963 two-owner '63 Corvette Coupe 1,250 miles away that he thinks he really wants. He has a RT flight booked for $300 - 2-weeks out to see and likely buy it. It may or may not be available when he gets there - it's a private owner - so he wants to give the guy a $5K deposit on it sight unseen AND negotiate a final price before he sees it too. I told him don't do it - but he really is anxious to lock-in the car and price. We're talking about a car that is priced in the $80,000+ range - I hope he doesn't buy a car that later he regrets buying 'cause it isn't as represented.

BobK - My 7.3 is in a 2002 E450 dually RV with a 4.10 rear end. The 4.10 is stamped on the differential. Wet, the coach weighs about #13,000. Dry - #12,225 - I know because I had to get a weigh tare for licensing in South Dakota. This year-model has the overdrive trans. did not come with a tach - so I don't know the RPMs - but I usually run at 60 mph on the open highway. I can expect 10.5 mpg on average on a tank of diesel. It has a 55 gal. full steel fuel tank. I do not tow. Just wanted to give you some feedback.

The guys doing my IP are at the dyno with a powerstroke, are expecting around 1300hp at 10,000rpm. Would be great in an excursion.

Truck pull engine, they do these regularly. The block will generally last several rebuilds.
