Can you get a car that has little or no rust, needs only minor repairs, for under $1K? Seems like it'll need major repairs or have two billion miles on it, no? Or do I live too much in the rareified air of nice W126 land?

the $1000 number is not a hard limit. A friend of mine routinely buys good/fair condition W126s in DC area for less than $1000. He and I are looking around and will find a car. Must be patient. ;-)

I agree you can get a W126 for under $1000 in the midwest. Certainly will not be a museum piece but a decent running/driving car none the less. Crazedlist.org is your friend.
