Wow, I didn't realize I said anything offensive. It was just a joke. I never made any comment on the price or the car itself at all, did I (other than a price reduction)? My joke was referring to why someone would want to sell a car that they poured so much into, and that you may not be that motivated. Was that out of line?

I love to tear into an ignoramus car dealer who prices his junk to the moon, or a person trying to slyly dump their car (and its various issues) on someone else. This is not one of those instances. I happen to give about 5 compliments to 1 flame, but nobody seems to notice the compliments. I'm also prone to wise cracks, which obviously rubbed you the wrong way. I apologize.

You certainly have a top 1% car here, which makes it challenging to peg a price on. I'm not even going to try. I'm sure whoever can get the money together for this car is going to be one happy owner. As its been listed for a while on other sites, I'm sure you're patient enough to wait for the right buyer to come around.

My question. Why no pretty white Mercedes battery in there? Under the hood it looks like a Chocolate Sundae missing its cherry.

Please give some examples where I have ever claimed to be an expert, or went after someone unjustly. I'd really like to know.

Tyler, I missed understood you, sorry. I must have mistaken you for someone else, who busted my butt last fall. I apologize, please except it.

It has a Benz battery now, that picture was taken before the MB battery went in.

I went over to see if I made any comments on your other threads, and I did. One post, which was just a little poke because you didn't give many details on the car back then other than it being a show winner. I guess I'm really getting a reputation.

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/sale-wanted-trade-giveaway/1460720-1991-560-sec.html

...and I was correct, you have reduced the price considerably.

You may beable to find one with lower miles, but you will have to do the Timing Chain and rails before you reach a 100,000 miles and that costs $3000.00 to do. something that should be factored in. Also I'll put the service records and prevenative maintenance up against any car. I have over maintained this car and that's why its so good. Stabil, 45lbs in the tires and a battery tender when stored every winter. At spring start up and when it hasen't run for more than 2 weeks and when you change oil, I disconect the ignition and crack it until it has oil pressure before starting to reduce stress on the chain, something everyone should do with these cars especialy with 90,000 or more miles with old rails, tensioner and chain. The chain tensioner leaks down over time and you'll whip and shock the chain if you don't do this, best to do it all the time even with new parts.
I find Tyler's comments, (when not kidding) and experience on cars here to be very valuable - he is one savvy DIY expert on buying and selling MBs. He is willing to share information and I have tapped into that knowledge to keep from buying some nightmare model MBs. If he exposed the fact that you reduced your price - so what? - is my reaction.

To reiterate - all things being equal - I happen to be a big fan of very low mileage Southern, Southwestern and Southern California pre-owned MBs. But as I stated, that's just my preference.

Wow.

Is this really a big deal?

My 560SEL often sits for over a month, the chain and rails have been changed every 100K, do I need to be this careful? Sure don't want to do any inadvertent damage....

Jim

Jim, I would, the tensioners even when new can leak down and when you get closer to that magic 100,000 miles you need to do it. You tag the valves and your in for Big Bucks.

Tyler, there was one on ebay with 59,000 miles that didn't sell for $20,320.00, it looked great but who knows its history.

I need the room in my garage. My neck has been fused and I can't use a snowblower. My driveway is up hill and its a bear to plow, I go thru plow guys every 3 years and this was the third. So I bought a tractor with a snowblower on it. Moved the SL and the SEC over to the sides and barely had enough room between them for it. I don't want to damage either car, so one has to go. The engine on the tractor is detailed to a tee, LOL

I am surprised that you changed the camshaft gears at 100,000 miles - I just had an upper engine rebuild on my '88 560SEC with 173,000 and the camshaft gears and lobes looked like incredibly good - like new. My chain was original and had stretched 7 degrees (mechanic had been watching it closely) and the guides were very much ready to come out - very brown/red in color and brittle. I know, I know, that most recommend changing the chain at 100,000 miles, but my german factory trained mechanic (he is 70 now) did not want to do it until now.
I don't do anything special in starting my car, but make sure that the oil is changed regularly.

PS - every dime I spent on the rebuild was worth it! It is my daily driver and I plan to keep the car a long time.

Nice SEC, very nice & since I am a pathetic, emotional buyer - I am the type of person who would likely pay (near) the asking price for the car if I drove it, liked the car without reservation and the owner had merit...

One of my favorite 500Es for sale out there has 165k - but the Maint. has been outstanding on it...

I like the car, comments, rescinded comments, apologies, suggestive behavior etc.....

Its all good...

Regardless of stretch in the chain, the rails have to be replaced between 90 and 100,000 miles. The rails are the biggest problem because of heat cycles and time. It makes no sense to leave the chain and gears in when replacing the rails. The gears and chain wear together and replacing one with out the other will wear the new parts excessively. You can not, have a gear or chain combination with different wear patterns. One new and one old will wear the other excessively.
Chain Stretch has nothing to do with Rail Degradation.

Ask any Machinist and he'll tell you the same thing.

The 500E is a different engine, ask someone who knows about it, weather the chain/rails have the same service intervals.
