1972 250C $4500/OBO

Peaches,

I have for your consideration a 2 owner (I am 2nd owner) 1972 250C. I bought this car from the original owner a a little less than 2 years ago in Key West, Fl.Leather seats, power windows, power sunroof, cd player, factory AC/HEAT, new goodyear white walled tires, 6 new bosch platinum plus spark plugs just installed today. Complete restoration done in June of 1983 totaling close to $15,000. Documented records available *see photos

How I got this car...(Skip if you don't care cause its kinda long)

I was down visiting my mother and saw it for sale in front of a restaurant, even though I couldn't afford it and had just purchased another Mercedes a few months earlier I decided to inquire anyway.( I guess I have the bug) I called the number listed in the window and an older lady answered the phone and told me a little about the car and that If I wanted to test drive the car I could meet her son later that night at the Restaurant they owned were the car was parked. After talking with her son I learned the car belong to his father who had passed away a few months back and that this car was his pride and joy. It drove great, it was love at first site though...I was going to make an offer no matter what! I told her son I was in the Air Force, an Airmen at the time...(2nd lowest rank) and I didn't make much money. In fact I couldn't even come close to the full asking price...but I offered to give them some money down and pay more than what they were asking if they would let me make payments and they could keep the car with them in storage the whole time. He told me he would talk it over with his mother and let me know. Later that night Jerry(the mother) called me back and told me she would accept the offer. I met with the following day to sign the paper work and shared a glass of wine. She told me how the story of the day they went to the dealership to buy the car. He wanted to pay cash so had a brown bag full of cash in the car and had left it sitting in the back seat as they strolled around the lot picking out which car they wanted. She let me leave that day with all the paper work that came with the car and all the service records. Jerry had mentioned to me that they did a restoration on the car in the early 80's. I found those records and was amazed to see what they paid...nearly $15,000. 6 months had passed, I made all my payments and it was time to pick up the car. Flew down to key west and drove it back up to South Carolina with no problems! Been driving it as my daily driver since!

Sorry for the long story...I just love this car so much. I thought I would never sell it, but I am expecting orders overseas soon, hopefully to Germany. The Air Force only allows you to bring one car overseas...I am forced to bring my '02 wagon...something my wife can drive as well.

I do want to point out this car is not perfect, here are some of the things you should know.

*Odom stopped working about 9 months ago...current reading 12,XXX...actual estimated at 115,XXX

*The A/C doesn't work, I tried to turn it on once and nothing happened. I never investigated it any further than that.

*The power sunroof doesn't work, I've never opened it for fear that it would get stuck. It does have a manual crank located in the truck if you felt like you wanted to open it.

*There is some rust forming up above the rear bumper, hasn't gotten worse since I've owned but it was something I wanted to have repaired.

*Rubber on front and back windows is aged, recommend replacing.

That's about all I can think of right now...If anyone has any questions feel free to ask. I'll try my best to get back to you the same day.

Thanks for looking,

Curt

Price

What do you think of my price, do I have it priced to high or is it in the right ball park?

Thanks,

Curt

I am studying one now with:
Less mileage (less than 100k documented)
No Rust
Working A/C
new tires, exhaust, and brakes
near perfect interior

For the same price as yours...

Hope this helps.

Thanks Walrus, maybe I gave my self a little to much room for negotiation. Will certainly take that into consideration....I figured I can always drop the price...

For me the price is too high although that's irellivent as I have no money anyway, but if I did have money the price is still too high for the following reasons.

First the rust. If there's rust like that which can be seen I worry about that which cannot be seen, at least not in the picutres. Also the lack of functioning AC. Might not matter to folks in other locations but it's an issue to me. All the rubbers that need replacing. Could the windshield rubbers be concealing rust holes for example?

I do like the look of it a lot though. I think it's a really nice color combo. If those were the original colors that they repainted when they did the "nut and bolt resto" then thats a plus.

Like I said though, I'm broke so take my advice with a pinch of salt.

Understandable, this is my last vintage Benz so maybe im setting myself up to hang onto it for a little longer with the price set as is, but I dont mind. Have had a few hits on CL so well see how those pan out. If nothing pans out and Im pressed to sell I will do the same thing I did with the '66 250S and just list my bottom line. In the meantime if anyone has any offers...Im all ears!

Are you sure you don't want to hold onto it for when you get out of the service? It is a nice looking and unique car. Maybe a forum member can help you to find a place to store it.

As nice as it is, I do think your price is high given the repairs that need to be done. And the rust is an unknown.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I have considered hanging on to it, but that would only happen if I stayed stateside. I would hate to leave it in storage for 3+ years...that would be horrible for any old car to sit like that. Cars come and go...I find myself falling in love with new ones all the time. So far no orders though...leadership at my squadron is saying the next wave will come down before the end of the month. I have a year left on my contract so I have made up my mind if I dont get orders overseas I'll likley get out. So many choices!

Thanks for the input though, if anyone makes me an offer either here or local I'll have a good idea of what a fair price is.

Price Drop...$3500/OBO

Hey Peaches,

I'm coming back down to earth and dropping my price. I am leaving Shaw AFB, SC for 2 months at the end of this month for training down in Biloxi,MS. Afterwards, I will be leaving SC for good headed to my next assignment. I would like to get the car sold in the next two weeks, that being said my new price is $3500/OBO. If you would like to make an offer or come check the car out, please pm me.

Thank you,

Curt

I think storing for 3 years isn't such a bad idea if you prepare for it (drain the gas, dump some oil in the cylinders, remove the battery, maybe put it on stands, etc.

I have a 71 250 C, also red, with a parchment interior. Yours has rust, but nicer paint. Mine doesn't. My AC doesn't work because the previous owner removed the compressor.

AC re-do in this car isn't cheap and there are a lot of parts to replace if you need to take the compressor out because you have to take the compressor out to get to a lot of things.

Window rubber front and back is going to be about $500 including parts and labor (that's for both gaskets and the labor to put your existing windshield back in). I know that because I went through that - leaks front and back.

I paid $4200 for my car about a year ago. 117,000 miles, runs great, lots of suspension work was done before I bought it. It's a great drive.

I'll probably be selling it (too many cars) and I'm sure I'll take a hit on it because people don't seem to value these coupes as much as I think they should! I think it will be worth more in 3 years if you can find a way to store it. Worst thing that will happen is gummy carbs. You might be able to add a gas stabalizer to the car and run it for a while to get "stable" gas to the carbs and the drain the tank...

Bad Day

Well, the orders I've been waiting on finally came down today. Seems like everyone got orders except me, makes no sense. Wish I hadnt have gotten my hopes up, anyway my training orders were canx'd, and my slot was given to one of my peers who got orders today. No big rush to sell anymore...but will still honor my listed price of $3500 if anyone is interested.

If you do end up going to germany, sell both and buy my ghia. No really, Ghias rarer in europe than the US and thus command higher prices. So do that, make a profit, than buy a sweet European spec Benz in Germany that you can bring back to the states when your tour there is over Than all of use here will be envious of your cool ride.

Yeah yeah, I had to try

SOLD SOLD SOLD

Peaches,

Sold the 250C this evening to a fellow airmen and German car enthusiast. While I am sad to see the car go its a comfort to know that it is going to a good home. I am now down to 1 car and ready to get orders to Germany!

Happy Motoring,

Curt
