1981 240D for sale
Location, West Chester, PA, (near Phila)
This car was originally a 300D and was re-engined with a 240 engine and manual 4 speed before I bought it in April 2004. At that time the ODO indicated 86K, but it was intermittent. I fixed it and it now reads about 230K, I drive it 82 miles a day, mostly highway.. Color is Thistle Green, with a dark green (avocado?) interior. Body - paint is in poor shape, with clear coat delaminating. I sprayed the trunk and hood with a one part acrylic enamel and sanded the roof and shot it with new clear coat. Active rust at... front of fenders near headlights, rear fenders near lip. Repaired rust at ... bottom of front fenders, rear fender lips, one spot at rear of rear door, pass side interior floor was rusted due to leak in windshield. Rest of body is actually pretty good, there is no rust on rockers or jack points or elsewhere underneath. Engine - given my lack of info about the actual mileage, all I can tell you is that it does burn/leak some oil, about a QT/750 mi. Smokes only on hard acceleration, not on startup. Starts easily in all temperatures Clutch - seems OK, but it does have a release problem. I get a soft pedal after driving for a while on the highway. If you use it , like in city traffic it is no problem. I have replaced the master cyl and hose, bled it and still it has this proble, so I guess it is the slave. Trans, shifts OK, except sometimes a little balky going into reverse Items replaced while I owned it... Oil cooler - this is not an OEM unit, it is an industrial unit adapted. Radiator, non OEM Upper control arms Outer tie rods Rear shocks One rear wheel bearing Both halfshafts re booted, RS has a nock due to one bad ball. Noticeable only when starting to move, quiet otherwise Driveshaft center bearing and both flex joints Muffler, front pipe is going to need replacement soon Water Pump/thermostat Emergency brake shoes Clutch MC Starter Mods and equipment removal... All A/C equipment is removed I have removed the mechanical fan and replaced it with an electric unit. My intent was to determine if it would save any fuel - it doesn't, but it worked fine during the last summer from hell. It had the auto climate dontrol, I replaced that with a manual system of my own construction, a homemade servo, manual fan switch and manual footvent control Flasher is modified so the flash unit can be replaced with a Pep Boys unit instead of the expensive OEM unit. Has relay to support higher wattage Hi beam headlights (but not the lights) What doesn't work - cruise - vacuum is OK A/C as mentioned above Original Becker radio is going, but it does have an MP3 input, which does work Spares included One halfshaft with new boots and grease Alternator Two new front fenders, which also need work, my plan was to repair and repaint them then install. Assorted filters $1250 OBO. I will send you pictures if you PM, I can't figure out how to post them here Thank You John |
