I bought this car while operating a company in Germany. When I sold my company in 1998, I brought it to the U.S. This car has been DOT'd and EPA'd and titled in Tennessee since April of 1999.
The electronic management control still has the original German CHIP, which probably gives a little more aggressive control of fuel and timing. The car has no speed limiter. Only control is the rev limiter, which is set at 600-700 RPM above max power. Max power is at 5700 RPM

Operating at wide open throttle, all signals from the mass-air sensor are ignored. Injection enrichment is controled by throttle position and RPM.
At the same time, as RPM and throttle position control full-load injection enrichment, air temperature and engine temperature supply inputs to control the advance of ignition timing for best accelaration without approaching knock. Therefore engine can develop maximum torque over the entire RPM range.

Note: The above performance benefit was eliminated shortly after this car was built.

PRICE: $23500

3-year unlimited mile warranty is also available for this car at an additional cost of $795.

Final drive?

Jim,
Does your car for sale really have a 3.82 final drive gear in it or is that a mistake. That car should pull like elephants if it is true but the gas mileage must be ?? in around town driving!
Just curious, nice car though and a deal for someone.

Nice car Jim,

Would you be interested in trading a 1999 Cadillac STS with every option?
BTW are you related to Larry Crews from Lawrenceburg who lives in Baneberry now? Larry and I are coming to Lawrenceburg every year for the invitational Golf tournament.

It was a typo. Final drive is 2.82:1 in lieu of 3.82.

Best regards
Jim

I have another limited edition Mercedes. Taking care of both at age 63 is too much. If I still had lived in Germany, I would sell the other one and keep the 500E. But living with these 55-70 MPH speed limits, the other one suits my needs better.

Best regards
Jim

Jim - super car! Any maintenance issues I would need to be aware of since the car was originally spec'd for the German Market?

I haven't found any difference in the DOT and EPA requirements on the ones sold in Germany and the ones exported to the States. As far as parts, I have two parts catalogs I have already ordered from and the part numbers are the same for the parts I've needed.

I've owned Mercedes since 1972. And of all Mercedes of all, this one has been the most trouble-free.

The only parts I've needed has been routine maintenance parts such as plugs, distributor caps, rotor buttons, spark plug compressors, and oxygen sensor which I've replaced every 24 months since new.

These parts (except oxygen sensor) are the same as all 119 engines, including the 430. I have been amazed at seeing some articles whereby the people think that parts for 500E's are hard to come by.

I sincerely believe if the timing chain on this car is changed every 100,000 miles and the oil that I've used since new (Valvoline Dura Blend 10W40) is continued to be used, the engine of this car is good for more than a half of a million miles.

I've never abused it. It was made to run the left lane of the autobahn and that's exactly what I've used it for. I can assure you, running this car at high speed (high RPM in 4th gear) will not hurt it. In fact it seems to run better under these conditions.
