People who take any price guide rub as bible rub me the wrong way in a BIG way. You cannot predict what an older car is going to go for consistently based on any of them. For example, my recently sold 1995 E300 is listed retail at Edmunds for $3400. People were lining up for it at $6500. If the buyer had fallen through 2-3 people would have gladly taken his place.

One of my indys is trying to (unsuccessfully I might add) get me to agree to selling my '99 E300TD to him at his price. He asked me how much I was selling it for, and I answered him; "$500.00 off retail." The OP has a beautiful, 55K low-miles SL that should bring some good coin. I do not believe he will have to give it away any more than I will give my MB diesel away. |

Nobody's taking a price guide as bible here. I am simply stating that the market for these cars has dropped along with the economy and $14k is very strong money. The car is gorgeous and probably capable of coming close with patience and persistence, obviously condition means more than any book. OP used KBB as baseline, I was saying there are other guides out there with other information. KBB seems close to dealer prices, private party is usually lower.

That is not what you said. You weren't telling him there's other price guides, you were point blank telling him, needlessly, that his car was overpriced. He's open to offers. I disagree with that type of selling strategy but its my own personal opinion.
How many of those cars were 1996 SL320s for you to post with such authority? He listed KBB retail as a starting point. There's no reliable way to get a good price guide on a 15+ years old. If you're not in a hurry why not sit and wait for as much money as you can? I keep my price commentary tight lipped now unless I think its double/triple ridiculous. Even then I rarely comment anymore. You wouldn't believe how much time I spend defending my asking price with some "expert" who spent 5 minutes on KBB/NADA/Edmunds only to sell to the next person who calls.

I don't defend my asking price anymore - I instead suggest they buy one that is the price they want to pay. I'm not into giving my cars away any more than I would give real estate away. If my price hurts so much - go elsewhere is my mantra. Were they actually able to pay for the car, they'd have the cash, instead of trying to get my car to meet their short funding. Were I to look at the SL with 55K miles on it, I'd probably buy it. I have a weakness for low miles MBs.
