W123 280 convertible for sale in Holland

I've added this 'cos I find it interesting - I've got nothing to do with the sale.

The advert says that it was done by Boonacker - they must be a Dutch company that modifies vehicles - it looks like they do hearses and taxis too.

It could be the condition of the car but the soft top looks like an after thought - though I reckon a 2 door W123 looks nicer with out a roof. To my eye only the 4 door W123 looks right.

I went down to INdy one time about 17 years ago or so to look at a 123 convertible. It was pretty rough but looked pretty much like that I suppose. I don't think it had 126 seats and it was a light color, perhaps white or silver.

I passed on it.

I'd do the same but it is nice to see how it could have been if Mercedes had decided to do one for real.

An English coach builder called Crayford used to make nice ones. I've also seen wagon versions of fintails and W116's that were made by them,. There used to a a shop near Putney bridge in London that had loads of them parked behind a gate. This was at least 10 years ago.

Thanks for the tip - I had found some information on another Mercedes forum about a Crayford W123 convertible.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crayford_Engineering

Gives a tiny bit more information including the mention of an S class estate!

That would be the W116 450SEL. There's a fellow here in Dallas that has one. I think that Crayford used the tail gate from an Austin Maxi for the rear hatch

I quite like those (hated them back in the day though).

But you see what I mean?

Yeah it is funny they almost look acceptable now. My Dad bought one. I think it was one of the more reliable cheap cars that he bought despite the hydro-elastic suspension failing frequently.

How come you know about them? Have you lived on this side of the water?

Anyway that S class estate reminds me a little bit of a 1960s Pontiac Safari - don't quite know why - but it has a more American feel despite being a product of Europe. It looks good despite the British Leyland parts.
