FS/feeler - Nice white w124 300d
I have an 87 300d sedan, white with creme interior. No rust, good interior, cruise & ac work, etc, etc. It has somewhere around 260k-270k (odometer broke last year). However the transmission is original and seems to be on its last legs, I get a flare at least once or twice per 20minute ride. Have been looking around for a replacement trans, but maybe it'll be easier to just sell it.
How much should I ask for this? |

A high mileage car with a broken odometer isn't worth a lot to start with, compared to a car with records and verifiable mileage.
Figure what it was worth if the trans was in good condition, then deduct for the cost of the transmission and the labor to R & R it. If it drops the value below that of a parts car, it's not worth repairing. Jim

Where is the car?
If it's a no-salt car, with a straight body and interior (haven't seen white with cream, I assume 'tex?) its worth fixing. Might be something repairable in the trans, but with those miles I'd assume the worst. A broken odometer is a killer also unless you have records that show when it broke, otherwise I'd assume over 300k. In this case, I agree it's probably a $1200 asking car, take what you can get. If the body is rusty, paint peeling, interior worn or stained, it's a parts car regardless. I've looked at a couple of driveable project '87 300Ds and walked away at $500 asking, there has to be some strong point to the car (either driveline or complete/nice body and interior). I ask where because the same car as the $500 no-sale cars in AZ with no rust might be worth it for a beater or parts car, or even to repair/replace the missing pieces or interior. Unfortunately there are so many '87 300Ds for sale out there in average condition for $2500 or so that a rough one isn't justifiable to repair. Even a rough '87 wagon is a parts car now.

I feel like I probably should have posted pics. It's a very nice car, and I've personally ridden in it back when the odometer worked and it was at 259k.
Going off what you guys are saying I should hold out until I find a diesel transmission at the junkyard. $200 to bring its worth back to $2500. |

Can you say (honestly) what might need addressed as far as repairs/defered maintanance? How's the front end. How close to "perfect" can you say it is(again, honestly)?

Perfect would be shining new, I don't think anybody can say a car is perfect. There is a 1 inch tear I made (d'oh!) in the back seat. Ummm... it doesn't have the sound deadening panels underneath the oil pan? Front seat has comfy pool noodles? Can't think of much really. I don't remember anything significant in the front end (I'd think if I saw some cracked boots I'd remember, and I've been under there several times).
I can break out in super-photo-mode top and bottom if there's any chance of selling it. Otherwise I'm feeling too lazy. |
