87 300TD - what would you pay?

For this one specifically:

http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/wsh/cto/2269435431.html

Some additional pics and an inspection revealed the following needs: left rear wheel bearing, serp belt/tensioner, rear bumper cover, paint on hatch and also roof clearcoat (front's been repainted, though not for damage or rust), door panel edges rehab'ed. A/C compressor cuts in and out apparently.

Mechanic said 'good base car, wouldn't pay top dollar'. So the asking price is way too high, but what do you feel would be reasonable? I have some idea, but any feedback is highly valued.

Thanks,

$4000 with the 22 head.

However, I am cheap. I think we have talked about this car before. Seems like we have seen most of the '87 wagons for sale in the last few months.

i wouldn't pay more than 2k....of course i don't see the advantages of a diesel...when a gasser should go 250k before the head needs to be re-done...

i find that too many things are needed at the 250k mark...so the cars pretty much become uneconomical to fix...even for a diy-er....

i.e. transmission and evaporator

Hard to say because I don't know what they're bringing right now. It took me 2 years to find a southern/rust-free '87 300TD that suited me, and it was still a project. I probably have around $11k in mine if I add it all up and it's still not "finished".

Seems like $4500 would be about right, more if the paint were fixed and other items, but I can't see this car being worth any more than $6k with everything perfect. I like the color, which is in its favor (and does impact value of a car), #22 head avoids the potential for a failure, just seems like the rest of the issues need to be repaired for it to be marketable.

A niche car, certain buyers will love it, most won't understand it. If he advertised it in the right place it might be sold by now even with the issues.

agreed.
it's priced about right.
no way I'd pay that for it, but the MAJOR things that are at issue with these cars have been done.
color is great though.
offer 4500 and see where it goes. I'd just about kill for that head though.

Thanks a lot for the replies. As a first-time buyer, I am definitely having a hard time with the valuation. The last few sold on ebay have brought $3600 - 3800, one other for a little less and one for a bit more that is being sold repeatedly (?).

Adding to the doubt, there have been a couple on CL in the last 2 weeks that were asking only $2k with claims of multi-thousands having been invested in them recently. One of these even had proof of a new head, but was inop (PS out) and looked like it had been badly repainted. With the understanding that any ownership/restoration is going to require some $$$k's, I did try for this one but was not quite fast enough.

For the one in question, I had made an offer in the range suggested and will go see the car tomorrow.

Good luck.

There are plenty of dogs out there, and they're worth parts in some cases. If you find a nice one that can be driven safely and dependably as-is, and the big items have been handled, it's an anomoly and IMO grab it even if you have to pay more than the "average" one because the average one is junk and a money pit.

In my mind I am still trying to figure out what all systems would need to be swapped between a '87 300d and a TE.
