Take the head and have it professionally checked for cracks. The 603 is not known for blowing head gaskets. It is, however, known for cracking 14 heads. Mine has been fine so far. They not all bad, I am the first one to say that. BUT, they are not known to blow head gaskets like the 602.

Good luck.

Nice car. Should make someone a nice ride. The W124 wagon is not in vast supply.
Given how clean it looks, this is a long term investment. The right buyer will see it as such.

stripped everything off the top this weekend...just gotta get the chain guide pins out and remove the vac pump and will yank the head...needless to say she is currently "off the market" until the head is checked out...

if head cracked probably sell as-is...heads are hard to find and not gonna keep sitting on it.

Pulled head this Saturday....head gasket blown at #1 just like the indy shop said...

but upon cleaning the valve seat areas it appears 3 of the chambers have cracks in them :-( I'm gonna clean it some more and see if it's just "random scratches" or such...but I'm pretty sure they are cracks...

So the wagon is up for offers I guess...i doubt I'm gonna find a head in the near future.

I'd rather go with an updated head if one can be found without breaking the bank. Somewhere there is a #22 hiding. I'd be hiding it too if I had it.

I could probably replace the head gasket and slap the old head back on and it would run...but for how long?

That's what I would do if I were you with a car with that many miles. I bet that head has been cracked for a long time. Unless you plan on doing a lot of hill climbs it could be fine. Other than the price of the gasket and your time, what have you got to lose?

you are probably right. It ran just fine until the head gasket blew. And it blew at the front. The cracks are in the rear chambers. Not related.

Anyway, if i get any decent interest on the market then i'll it go. otherwise i'll probably try a gasket unless a nice deal on a newer head pops up...not likely...

i have too damn many vehicles, lol
