FS: 1991, 300D 2.5 Turbo, Atlanta, $400
300d 2.5 Turbo (W124.128). Engine: 692.962. $400 OBO.
This really is a very nice and dependable vehicle. Wonderfully economic with that diesel engine.... Well, it was! 1. My dependable daily driver for the past 10+ years until 3 weeks ago, when the timing chain came off the camshaft sprocket. (Ouch! See pix) 2. The engine is toast. After only 235k miles! Every oil change done too! 3. However... Body complete, sound and perfect (always a Georgia car). 4. Inside perfect. See pix. 5. Meticulously maintained by an independent MB shop for 20 years. All service records documented in 2 Maintenance Books (I filled up the 1st one). 6. All service at designated intervals; all oil changes. 7. Tires good. Transmission good (automatic). 8. Needs refrigerant. Won't somebody offer 'Benzi a new home? I just can't face sending him to the graveyard... Too good a car. But I have nowhere to work on him. Drop in a used engine. . My condolences. Just out of curiosity, what oil did you use?
I have two of these, a 91 and a 92, and have gone back and forth in my mind as to whether to replace the timing chain. My 92 has 232,000 miles. I really hadn't heard of any examples of well-maintained 602 engines having timing chain catastrophes....until yours. Quote:

Also, did you have any warning signs at all?

If it didnt cost to much to transport i'd be all over there even though i don't have a line on an engine. My buddy has a car identical to it that runs perfect but not as nice as this. We could pull his motor and put it in this one.

In regards to the questions about the sad demise of my 300d 2.5.
1. What oil?: I used dino oil, but the variety changed depending on who did the oil changes. 10W40 for the most part. 2. Any signs? About 30 seconds before the motor began to lose power, I was going up the on-ramp to I75 (no more than 20MPH) when I heard a clicking sound from what sounded to me like a stone caught in one of the tires. I figured it would come out, and proceeded to accelerate and merge. Before that, however, no signs. But read on.... 3. Ironically, about 5 years ago -within 1/4 mile of there I heard the click, at 6am on a rainy day in winter, I was proceeding along what I thought was a 3-lane road (I had just turned on to the road). However, I was actually in an approach lane for the I75 on-ramp. Result: Benzi ran over the curb, which was about 6 inched high, but which zapped the oil pan. I had everything replaced --tires rims on the front, pan and the oil pump, etc, by my regular shop, and all was well until a few weeks ago. Voodoo I75 exit for me! I do wonder if hitting that curb (at 25mph) right between the front wheels, which caused the engine to bump up under the hood (there is a small dent) might have bothered smething other than what i had replaced.... But it was 5 years ago. Just a thought. 4. Moral: If you hear click from the bows, stop! |

Thanks for the additional details. I wonder if there's the possibility that you used an oil that wasn't diesel rated.

That is a bummer. I wonder if the oil pump locked up and caused the main chain or both to jump off the sprocket?
Where specifically is the car in Atlanta? |

I use U-ship all the time. You dont put your personal info on the listing. people will bid. you choose the one you like pay and then have it moved. you do tend to get a lot of Emails (one per bid, one per question etc) but I've never been called until the match was made.

Click the "Get Price Quotes" tab. The quotes are approximate, not exact, so don't get too excited if you get one or two that are real cheap - might go up $100-$200 after you actually talk to the company. But it will give you a good idea on the transport cost. |
