CL Alert: 280TE AMG Wagon (WDC Area)

This keeps popping up and then disappearing on DC Craigslist.

I'm a little scared by it because it isn't a diesel, but it seems so profoundly cool. If I can't talk myself into it, I thought I'd at least share it with the board.

1982 MERCEDES 280TE AMG

Comes with 2 Pentas, would really need them all around to look right IMO.

It does indeed seem very cool. I was going to go look at it, but then the price had changed (between craigslist posting #1 and #2) to a number that totally put me off. Now it seems it's back down to something moderately reasonable.

For the sake of educating PP, and in case you hadn't seen this Grey, this car was on Jalopnik:

For $10,500, This W123 Has Been Around the Block

Edit: I think there's a link or two in the story that directs you to previous FS threads.

Those seats don't look like black leather in the photos.

I remember when that car was for sale in San Louis Obisbo. From those adds, I think he got less than $2000.00 for it.
I would still love to have it but not for the asking price.

Anyone have an update about this car? Any idea if it has been sold -- it doesn't seem to be on craigslist anymore.

I called the guy a while back but never had the time to go check it out.

I think I'll have some time on my hands this weekend. If you guys are interested it's about 15 min from my house, I could go pick it apart.

If this car was in SoCal it would be in my garage, can't believe you have a hard time selling it.

i feel the same way you do, but i'm on the east coast. the problem is, if i may speak frankly, that the craigslist ads have disappeared, popped back up, prices have changed numerous times, and there hasn't been a single, concise ad that tells the story of the car, the goods and bads, and has real, up to date pics of every angle, ugly or not, of this car.

when someone is selling a pre-merger AMG, i want to see pics of the paperwork and the AMG decals on the engine and door panel, not pics of it back in the day, or pics of a for sale sign. i want to know it's history in the ad, an explanation of why it has US DOT lights on it, the goods, the bads, and the terribles. i need to see better pics of what appears to be some serious damage to the back door. i need to know about rust, storage history, where it's been driven (i.e., was it driven in/on salted roads), especially a car found on the east coast.

not to mention that most of us here are over at benzworld too, and know this car has changed hands quite a few times. i'm curious to know why. i also want to know why the interior looks like a teenagers beater car interior. why hasn't any previous owner cleaned it up? did they get overwhelmed with what's wrong with the car and give up? what's under those seat covers? the ads list black leather interior but there must be some serious problems to cover it up like that.

i'm waiting to see a full disclosure ad with all the info one would expect for a car like this. i'm not a fan of calling someone and talking for 45 minutes about your mutual love of these cars, the history of AMG, the specs of your own personal mercedes collection, and THEN getting to the real nitty gritty of the car for sale. i don't want to have to coax full disclosure and honesty out of a seller (i'm not saying the seller is dishonest here), i want that info upfront and out in the open so i can make an informed decision. i'm not scared of working on a car, i just want to know what i'm getting into before i make a phone call.

just my 2 cents. MERC Master would be well served by putting up fresh for sale ads on the forums with all the info he can possible get together and a link to a photobucket page with more photos than you could possible want. that's what sold the car i just bought: Pictures by davidseuro280e - Photobucket

it's not just "do i have the funds for this purchase", be also, "do i have the funds for what it needs."

If the car were brought in and Federalized per the law, it would have had USA spec headlights installed, among other requirements.

Sure, the original owner "should have" put the euros back on, but that would have been illegal.

Edit- your new euro 280e has USA headlights as well....

not anymore...

yes, mine had us dot lights, tail lights, corners, egr, and a cat converter. but all of that was explained out in front, right off the bat, with pics of the documentation and an explanation of the importation history of the car. but that's something a buyer wants to know: was it federalized through normal procedures? was it brought over by military personnel and by-passed the usual routes? what was the grey market story of this example, inquiring minds want to know.

i realize my post went far into the territory of how i personally think any for sale ad should look, and might be critiquing this one unfairly. it's just that when someone can't believe how long it's taking to sell a car, there are usually reasons that might not be obvious to the seller. not to mention that i too am interested in this car and would love to see the documentation and the pics the seller says he has, and hear an interesting AMG grey market story!
