72 450 SL for sale - Columbia, SC
Tonight I met a recently widowed woman when I went to her house to buy a desk. I am not in the market, but she has a 1972 450 SL in the garage and it's for sale. I took a couple of pics and offered to post on this site for her. If you have any interest, please PM me and I'll put you directly in touch with her. Not my car so I only know a little bit about it.
I took a quick look at it and can tell you it is in good shape, but not perfect. It has Euro bumpers and supposedly was imported by the original owner. (Her husband was the second owner, I believe.) It is an automatic and it was repainted a couple of years ago. It is a medium dark emerald green. Comes with two tops. She tells me it was very well maintained by her late husband. I obviously offer no guarantee of anything I was told. I am simply posting this as a favor to her. Is it feasible for someone give a range of what this may be worth? She has a figure in mind but I'd like to get some feedback from you folks before I tell what it was. Here are the pics:

FWIW those aren't euro bumpers. They have the rubber over-riders on them. The early 107s all had the thin chrome bumpers, but the US cars had the vertical overriders.
It could have been federalized, I know this because I have a 1972 350SL, and was told that it was a Euro by the seller, and that the person who owned it before his father imported it. If the vin is 107044 its a US car, if its 107043 its a euro, however there never was a euro 450SL in 1972. It would have been a 350. Beautiful car though, good luck with the sale, I love mine.

Hard to put too fine a number on it without more info, miles, maintenance history, etc., but offhand I'd think it is in the $5,000 ballpark. Anyone else have a thought? |

This is pure SWAG, but $5K is optimistic I think. $3500@4500? Maybe around 4?
It is hard to tell without a drive and inspection. |

What is the condition of the interior?

Thanks for the responses and info. I should have gotten more info, but only noticed this on the way out and needed to get back home. As far as the interior, the windows were up and I didn't even open the door. I peered through the window and I can only say it looked OK. Not pristine, but I did not notice any glaring tears or problems.
The lady said one relative told her something like the mid-range value (not sure of the source) was around $13K but she'd take $9500 for it. I'd be happy to provide her contact info. Just PM me. I could possibly go back to get more info for someone, but I know nothing about these cars and probably couldn't provide any info not available from the lady. And it's about 30 miles from me so I'd rather not get more involved unless someone is very serious about buying it. Oh, there's a good indy a mile or so down the road, so a pre-purchase inspection could probably be arranged without much trouble. None of the 1972 US cars had the park benches on them. If it was a euro it would have a 3.5L motor with a lot more power, in my opinion whether or not it is a euro is fairly important. So how is that splitting hairs?

I think $5,000 is a bit low, mostly because that's what I have in mine and I like to think my car is worth what I have in it, but $13,000 is 560 money, which is a better car.

Value is subjective at best
These cars have taken a tumble. Great if you're a buyer, not so hot if you're a seller. I just bought a '79 450SL with under 80,000 original miles, original paint, zero rust, two owners, in the south all it's life. Superior to the '72 in that they solved the overheat problems by pushing the cats downstream, other than that about the same car. Paid $7300.00
If the miles are over 100,000 and no one has done a timing chain, tensioner or guides, it is a time bomb. With good documentation, no rust and proper service you'd be OK asking $5000. If the history is unknown it is a dice roll. No one in the know is going to pay anywhere close to $9500. Check out Craigslist for local car prices. Last edited by Vintage; 03-06-2012 at 01:17 PM. |

The '72s didn't have cats, and neither did '73s or '74s. No overheating issues.
Double row timing chains can last over 100K; no need to change it earlier because of fear mongering by for-hire mechanics. Tensioners likely won't last this long. Plastic guide rails can last beyond 100K, but age is more of a concern than mileage. A time bomb it certainly is not. |

I think if you re-read, you'll see I was the one splitting hairs...

On a serious note though, I think the early 107 cars should appreciate in the next... decade. Many were killed off by rust, they've really bottomed out in value, the 129s are moving their way into the toilet value-wise and the 113 cars are already pulling upwards really hard. The 107 isn't nearly as low production but I could see some sort of collector value to the very early cars. But I gather she wants to sell today, not 10 years from now lol.
