1971 MB 220D 4-Speed, Syracuse, NY area

I bought this 1971 Mercedes 220D to add to my collection but I don't have time to fix it up now.

I bought it from the original owner last fall. It has 96,500 original miles, 4 cylinder, 4 speed. Good condition for the age.

The floors need attention due to rust. Also inside the fender wells and behind headlights. While running, either the water pump or the alternator is making a sound like a bad bearing. Otherwise in good shape AFAIK. Drives smoothly up and down the road.

$1000

do you have any more pics you can post? maybe some detailed info on, and pics of, that rust? some pics of the interior? will it drive from syracuse to ithaca or is that bad bearing noise a sign of impending doom? has it lived in upstate all of it's life? was it driven in the snow/salt? how are the tires? do you have a list of recent work done or work it will need in the very near future?

thanks!

I posted a short video showing the Mercedes this morning here.

The original owner was a nice old guy whose wife said it was time to let go of his baby. He said it was never driven in the winter, but from the body rust, I don't know if I believe him. It would have only taken one or two winters on our salty roads to cause the amount of rust here. He was pretty old. Maybe he forgot. Besides the floors and a few bad spots, I see no evidence the frame has any problem. My son's 300D just broke in half right at the rear sway arm behind the rear hub. Seeing the 220D, it is immaculate by comparison at that particular spot.

Here's a photo of the 300D:

300D is toast...

220D for comparison...

Are Youtube video links allowed?

1971 Mercedes 220D - YouTube

All I said was that the original owner said it was never driven in the winter. He was a nice old fellow, but maybe he's getting forgetful. One or two winters on our salty roads would have caused the rust that it has.

I tried to post the video link but I get the "a moderator has to review your post" message.

Try this...

youtube.com/
watch?v=j5KtROYjIDM

The previous owner said it was never driven in the winter. Although he was a nice old guy, maybe he's getting forgetful because one or two winters is all it would have taken on our salty roads.

That's ridiculous. Maybe I don't know the rules, but no links to Youtube? You've got to be kidding. Then it promises the moderator will review the post and he never does.

ability to post links and stuff is related to post count.

You have to surf around and post in the non OD forums to get to a point to post links I bet.

Ran into this on some other forums. Think its a good idea though, prevents auto sale spamming of the for sale sections from dealers and stuff and preserves the forum

I would need all that info and more to make a educated purchase decision.
