1996 S500 Coupe

I've owned this car for ten years now and its truly been one of the best cars I've ever owned. When I was working for a living, this was my daily commuter when the weather was nice. Now that I'm retired, it doesn't get used much and I could sure use the garage space. I hate to see it sit.
Years back, I was a frequent visitor to this Forum and have posted over 400 posts here. Some of you may remember me. Before I put this in the local papers, I wanted to offer this car, at a very reasonable price, to a Mercedes nut like myself I have a clear New Hampshire title for the car.
The car is finished in Black with a grey interior. Just checked the mileage, its a tad over 133K. Runs flawlessly and everything works. No quirks or strange "check engine" light here. No disappointments.
Original paint except for the front bumper which was badly scratched when I first got the car. There may be a better looking S class Coupe around, but I sure haven't see it.
I removed the original wheels ten years ago and had them refinished. They are in boxes and go with the car. I took them off because they are staggered offset and don't allow tire rotation. The present wheels are from an early 2000's S class.
Don't want to fill up web space descibing all the things this car has. If you've read this far, you probably know. I've added a wood steering wheel to the normally well equipped list. Equipped with performance cross drilled brake rotors.
No rust of any kind anywhere. Never driven in the snow that I know of.
I'm looking for an easy, clean sale.
If you'd like a somewhat rare Classic MB Coupe at a good price, this it. Looks great, runs and drives better.

Also have a number of "spares" including a commercially rebuilt M119.980 short block, headlights, etc, etc. These are available and will be offered to the buyer for extra dollars.
The car is located about 2 hours North of Boston in Southwest NH. In case you're wondering, the pix were taken while I lived in Virginia.
You can reach me at gearhead285@hotmail.com to see more pix, etc.

Oh, and not interested in shipping to a distant country via a bogus certified check.

A fast, quiet, competent Coupe in excellent shape. Cash deal for $5900.

Ken

Beautiful example of them. Pretty rare, to see one.

good color combo, low mies and the miles are right.

It's the successor to MY coupe.

Good luck with the sale. (I think it is an excellent price, especially when you imagine what it cost new. ) That's the perfect engine too- the V12 is over the top and too heavy and complex.

Save the vanity license plate _ KENS BENZ is great!

Thanks Jim.
Of course I agree with everything you said. Personally, I think all Mercedes should be either Black or Silver... but, that's just me.
I think 1996 was a good year for the S Class as Mercedes did a "freshening up" that year including installing the M119.980 engine in this car. No more fussing with distributors, ignition wires and all the associated pieces. Believe it was also the first year for the 722.6 transmission.
No wiring issues either because of insulation cracking, etc.
In this fitment, the dual overhead cam aluminum V8 produces 315 hp yet delivers over 20 mpg average consistently.
Had a V12 many years back... required constant attention and the insurance rates were rediculously high. Anyone considering a V12 needs to call their insurance company for a sobering "wake up".
Occasionally, I used to see other S Class Coupes when living down South, but haven't seen another in about 5 years now.
Alas, when I moved from Virginia to New Hampshire, the KENZ BNZ plate went away... now she sports a plain old, run of the mill set of plates.

Beautiful car. Best of luck with the sale. Agreed about calling your insurance company. Your car maybe is the best example in the northeast and your price is pretty much unbeatable. Not many 140's come up this way. The V12's are wonderful but like any 12 cylinder engine no matter where and who produces it, requires more care then other types of engines. More complex and more moving parts it is as simple as that. Proven over time to be reliable is well kept. Upkeep is very important and I think many just cannot afford it or become offened by the money needed to upkeep one that they just tend to poke fun at it with no real experience with it. A V12, V10, 16Cylinder and other types of engines found on higher end cars all have their (+) and (-) There are so many who talk of them who know nothing of them or had experience with one.

Nobody?

Zero interest at the listed price.

How about $5500? Offer?

Thanks, Ken

Fresh Pix

I've had some requests for updated photos of the car. Rest assured, it looks identical to the pix I already posted.
The car is garage keep and has only accumulated about 3K miles since I left Virginia. 700+ miles of that was the drive up here to beautiful New Hampshire.
Nevertheless, here's a couple of pix I took this afternoon.

Still Looking

Still looking for a real buyer for this classic Mercedes Coupe.
Uncovered it two days ago and took it outside for a wash.

Can't tell you how many guys have contacted me with various scams and generally wasted my time.
If you're in the New England area, and want a rare classic Coupe, drop me a note. No dreamers or tire kickers please. Offered for sale as is, where is. Cash sale. In my mind, this car is worth every penny of the 5500 dollars I'm asking for it, but will entertain a serious offer.
No, I won't ship it to South America and won't drive it to California/Florida for you to look at. Sorry, I'm just like that.

A couple of pix taken two days ago attached.

Thanks.

A beauty. After my experience with a 95 W202 I was willing to pass on anything newer that a W124. Nice to know there were anomalies. I do like your car. GLWS!

see you're just too rigid! in this economy you have to be willing to let deposed Nigerian princes and deployed military personnel have their "shipper" come and pick up the car after their check (for more than the amount you're asking) clears

seriously though, i let one of these go at an auction 3 years ago because i thought it would be $8k and it went for $5400!! i wanted to eviscerate myself but i did the next worst thing and made an impulse buy: 1993 300se....was an ok car but i wanted that coupe!!!
your's looks excellent and i remember when you posted it some time ago; very surprised to see it still available

Guys,
Thanks for the compliments on the car. If/when I sell it, I'll probably regret the sale as soon as the buyer pulls out of the driveway.
I've gotten a couple of emails wanting to see the interior, so here are a couple more pix.
As you can see, its a true pillarless Coupe. There is no vertical pillar between the front and back side windows. Because of space constraints, the back windows don't quite disappear into the body, but its close.
This arrangement requires a bit of engineering and electronics to make it all happen.
When everything is closed up and you move the door handle, the back window goes down about 1/4 of an inch, then the front window goes down about the same, and then the door opens.
When you close the door, the autocloser grabs the door latch, pulls the door in and reverses the window process. That way, Mercedes can latch everything together and lock the windows into the roof when they are closed.
The result is zero wind noise.

Alas, new hampshire is pretty far from me, but I was looking at a 1996 s600 coupe in my city with 75k for about $12k, in great shape it seemed. But am nervous about the v12 maintenance costs and reliability. I was interested to hear the thoughts on this thread therefore. I own a w124 400e with the m119, and I have to say that when that car is running well, it is wonderful. love the m119. but that v12 was, well, a very uncanny combination of buttery smoothness and kick you in the pants zing.

If there was a 1996 s500 like this one, near my town and it has all its records and got the thumbs up from my mechanic, it would no longer be for sale!
