Got a VIN for it?
A quick call to MBUSA with it could set the story straight. Sure seems awfully strange with the Chrysler font. Pretty tidy looking car tho. FWIW, in Europe the W124 Cab sales went into 1996, so in essence this could have been one of the last cars bound for USA but for sure it wasn't one of the last cars of the line.

In browsing the European classifieds I have come across a few 1997 Last or Final Editions of the W124 cabriolet though, which are legit. Here is a link to a German article I dug up. Even the official Special Edition package available here in the US near the end of the 1995 model year was not offered on the W124 coupes or cabriolets. Remember these cars had very high sticker prices when new & relatively low production numbers. The cars are special in and of themselves already (they don't build them like that any more, that's for sure!). MBUSA or any of it's dealers would not be haphazardly throwing cheesy plaques & badges all over the car (certainly not Chrysler ones at that)! I don't see the mystique in owning a made-up special edition, but owners are free to do whatever they like to their cars as far as upgrades or modifications go, but come time to sell it don't try to pass it off as an original (at least not on a M-B forum!).

Years ago I would have said all of this stuff is aftermarket, but after traveling through Germany in 2001 and buying a 1995 E200 Cabriolet...I would think differently. It does however look to be Dealer installed and not factory. This sort of think is still very Popular in South Florida.
In London I have a 1997 E220 Cabriolet/5 speed manual/ manual cloth seats. No Air Conditioing. Manual climate control..But it has an Immobilizer that was not available here until 1999 cars, and grey guage cluster all factory. |
