You are asking way too much. I picked up a 420SEL from Richmond 4 months ago for much less. I understand that you and everyone in this forum respect the way Mercedes engineered this car and no doubt its clean minus the rust and its the turbo diesel, but resale value sucks on these cars.

With that being said, please don't scrap it. Be patient and find someone that will love it as much as you did. I sold my super clean 300SEL for $500. Complete loss, but the guy was an enthusiast and took care of it and I was a broke college student at the time.

Well, this car is back on the chopping block again.

Changes since the original post:
Odometer is at 237,xxx

All 4 calipers replaced with reman, brakes serviced. Brake flex hoses replaced.
New pads / rotors installed.

Reman 3 piece driveshaft installed, with new U joints, carrier bearings, and Mercedes flex disks.

Converted to electric radiator fans, with 2 stages.

Front heated seats installed from a 91 560SEL. Factory harness used, with no cuts / modifications to either the seat or car harness.
Becker radio amps replaced with single, reliable Alpine.

3 new glow plugs. New motor mounts, trans mount, and rear subframe mount.

SL wheels installed, with 5mm spacers on the front to clear in the front. Needs tires before any long trips.

Motorola AM/FM/CB antenna. Cobra compact CB.

Motor has *no* blowby. See Video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DT0Q69Ib0o4

Make me an offer! perkins.jason@gmail.com

Thanks,

-J

I suspect that rust is going to chill a sale for any reasonable price.

Agreed. Despite the owner's desire to make substantial repairs to the car, the rust is a major turn off and far more expensive to resolve.

In my opinion, having recently sold a 350SDL on BAT and researched selling prices in great detail this is maybe a $1000 - $1500 car for the right person.

I'm just scratching my head wondering why anyone would commit any money to this in the condition it's been in for some time....

I expect this. If you're interested let me know. I mostly want it to go to someone who will enjoy it as much as I have.

Also, I'm expecting an offer in the $1500 range. I realize this SDL needs a lot of help, but it does have a few things going for it.

Mechanically, it likely has many years of reliable service left to give. And aside from the fender rust, it presents quite well. Are replacement SDL fenders hard to come by? Or difficult to replace? Curb appeal would go way up with replacement fenders.

FWIW, on my previous w210, both front fenders were similarly rusted. I found used replacements in the same paint color, on ebay. Total including Greyhound shipping for both fenders was under $500. A few hours wrenching in the driveway and the car looked great again.

You mention in first post the need for a repair but no pics. How about current photos of subframe rust? I didn't notice any in the pictures from 2012 or 2015.

Fenders aren't that big a deal as already pointed out but the condition underneath is, so Please do this car a favor and post so one can make a reasonable decision.

I don't know if W126 fenders are glued on in addition to bolted. On the 116, you need to heat the fender to pull it off. Not a fun job.

Looked on eBay today and saw quite a few company offering fenders $86-$225 with shipping already primed.
I've never used one but if it was good fit wouldn't be that hard to prep and spray close enough match.

But the subframe mounts might be a little more work be curious to see some detail on the current condition. With all the repairs for sure there is good life left.

I do have a non-rusty fender to go with the car (in a different color).

Here's a picture of the body mount rust on the driver's side. The passenger side is similar:

So no interest at all? I know if I donate this car it’ll go straight to the shredder. With all the new parts I’d think $1200 is a very reasonable ask.
