I am going to look at a 1990 420SEL today. Not a diesel but i want to see / feel the difference.

What are the pros and cons of having a SDL vs a 420SEL?

Well... The 1990 420SEL looked pretty good. Nice black interior with only one small scuff on the passenger seat. All the rubber weather strippinng looked great. Has original radio. The wood is very good but the wood on the console is a little wavey. All windows and the sunroof work well. AC blows cold.
Outside looked fair. Paint is shiney. The rear bumper is good with cosmetic scuffs on the corners and the coating is in bad shape. Two possible rust spots on the vertical seams above the rear bumper. The front bumper is .. well shagged. The grill is bent a little at the bottom. no further rust was found.
The engine started right up. I could hear a small exhaust leak coming from under the car near where the rear floorboards are. A belt is missing for whatever the accessory at the botton right side of the engine. Smog pump?

I like this car but I will pass. If the front bumper and grill where like the rest of the car, I would keep it on the "Short List".

This one I bought and sold a while ago and the current owner wants to sell it. Very nice shape and the coolant system has been completely gone through among other things. He's done some more work to it to keep it 100% but I don't know the details. Less than 200,000 I believe, but can't remember specifically, and he wants what he paid for it... $4500 range.

I just looked at a white 1989 420SEL.
The body and interior is very good. No rust at all. California car.
The sunroof would not open. No noise, nothing.
AC not cold and not blowing out the front vents.
Hood is slightly up at right front corner. not bent, just not sitting all the way down.
Lower left fender trim has a gap.
Engine has a off-idle stumble but otherwise feels good. No exhaust leaks.
The radio is gone. Just an open hole.
Asking price $3,750
This one is going to stay on my short list for now.

Looked at a 1987 560SEL today. The photos in the add did it way too much justice. It is rather shabby and a No Go. the search continues. This is actually kind of fun. Plus got to eat at the original Ragin Cajun. Going to look at one in Katy next. It's my neck of the woods at least.

Next. Never went to look at the 1980 300SD. I talked to the person and asked a lot of questions. I was told the interior is only in fair condition and there is a hesitation and "jerks" when accelerating.

Off to West Columbia to look at an 1986 560SEL. Yep. the one on craigslist with American flags on it. I may have to expand my scope to include W140's. Saw a nice 92 500 SEL.
