Very interesting, very - does anyone have any more real world experience with this vintage of W211's?
I've been reviewing forums etc online and there is some real hatred towards them/ then others say they aren't too bad or just need a lot of work. Some said 'worst car I ever owned' others 'no problems with 200K plus'. Some think they are the lowpoint of mercedes and not worthy of the name :0 Few points I took away from it all: The later ones are better. They changed component suppliers and the issues improved. The suspension on this particular model is more boulevard than sport - was not loved that much. Nobody likes the electronic brakes on these. The engine seems like the best thing about it- pretty loved and no major issues. Tranny I couldn't find much on. (5 speed automatic I think) Some bits inside are nice, but mercedes really cheaped out on some of the plastics and they wear poorly and complaints on build quality and seat wear, and rust. Others said no issues, good 'bones' just of the subsystems etc were issues. I think the best synopsis I saw was something along the lines of "it was priced at $50K but it's more like a good $30K car". Does this one have the upgraded seats by chance? I welcome your opinion too Tyler, but of course you've got a horse in this race. *do you recall the major service/repairs this one had? Ross |

My father-in-law owns a 2006 CDI with 100k on the ticker and swears by it. No major maintence issues. Prior to that, it had been volvos for 20 years and he'll never go back. My uncle owns a 2005 that he bought brand new after I convinced them them of the diesel route. They have about 50k on their's with no issues. Every car line will have their issues, but I think no one build them better than MB.
And the MB Tex seating is the way to go. |

Yup, every generation E-class has always had its strong and weak points. I've never seen a rusted W211, but lots of rusty W210s. 124s had head gaskets, evaporators, 123s vacuum issues, on and on.
For the record, the electronic brakes are warrantied until 3-30-2016 or unlimited mileage according to MB of Sugarland. I've never seen any recurring issues with the chassis.

This one is a reluctant sale anyway, as I'm in no hurry. Don't know when I'll find a deal like this one again, and from a cost per mile standpoint with all of my driving, it would pay for itself in 3-4 years versus driving my Roadmaster wagon. I also have a 2004 E320 4-matic and the CDI out accelerates that car easily.

Those are great cars!
My uncle has a 2007 E350 4Matich he bought new and he has never had a problem with it. Drives it to FL for the winter every fall, and back up in the spring, think he has about 50k on it. I'm very tempted to grab it when he trades it off for an A6 in a year.

Talked to Tim yesterday afternoon.
He was just entering Maryland on I-68 and had driven over 800 miles on the first tank, and averaged 41 point something mpg running between 70-85 mph. Impressive. Jim

Interesting discussion. Sounds like if/when the time ever comes, an 06 CDI is a logical next step for me if I want to make a quantum leap forward....currently 91/92 300D. Very content for now, though.

If you want to remain contented I'd recommend that you never drive a CDI.
Add me to the list of Tyler's happy customers, the car was exactly as described and Tyler was a joy to work with.
