CL Find 1977 200D 4 speed German Import 100K $3,900

Ran across this CL listing

Clasic 1977 Mercedes-Benz 200D

Had to check it out, was wondering if the owner didn't know he had a 240d, but since it's a german export, it might be just a 200D with a manual.

Pretty cool. If it is in the condition it appears to be in then $3900 may be a good starting point.

That's what I was thinking...what is top speed? 55 mph? Good thing it doesn't have A/C... It's obvious my 5-cyl turbo is working hard with the A/C on. Performance suffers and it blows more smoke when at stop lights, etc. With an extremely small 4-cyl non-turbo it's hard to believe that it would be able to keep up with cars on the road. Looks very nice though.

From Nitske's '46-'95 production models book (I don't have a TDM, please correct if the specs are not right)

1977 200D Specifications

Horsepower: 55 @ 4200 rpm; max 5300 rpm
Torque 83 ft/lb
RPM's @ 100 km/hr (62 mph) 3395; 4-spd manual
Weight: 3025 lbs
Top speed: 130 km/hr (81 mph)
Acceleration: 31 sec 0-100 km/hr (0-62 mph); 4-spd manual
Fuel Consumption: 8.3 liters/100 km (28 mpg); 4-spd manual

Given a relatively flat stretch of highway, I'm sure it would be happy to cruise at or near it's top speed all day long.
Certainly it has adequate power for around town.

we had a family friend here in Ga that had one of these almost identical. They kept it up until the mid 90's until believe it or not....it fell to pieces due to rust..I remember thinking then how odd considering it had always been a Ga car

Cool car tho!

The euros had less rust proofing than the us cars I think. It couldn't have been driven on salt and be that clean I can assure you.

I'd be interested in it if I didn't already have benz diesels around.

I'd guess the lighter weight of the euro pretty well offsets the lighter horsepower of the 200D. The place it would be noticable probably would be on the highway where you are attempting to increase speed at 60 mph or so....but the 240 is so weak there who really cares? You'd just have to shift to third and get to your cruising speed and shift to fourth in either car.

Drove a NA 1.9L VW diesel recently along I40 from OK to CA, long about Flagstaff it was getting kinda pokey, but it'd still hold 70mph.

That 200D would be a good candidate for a mild turbo. There was a good vintage article floating around here about adding turbo's to an old W115 4cyl diesel a few years back.

Nice thing about the little bitty VWs is the range of gearboxes that have adequate 5 speed ratios. Not so with 4 cyl MBs....
