I went through four 99s back in the mid 80s-early 90s. First one was a 76 that I bought for $200 and used as a daily driver. I had a sort of love/hate relationship with it. It took me everywhere, but broke down constantly. Wiring was a nightmare, and it kept frying alternators. Couldn't keep the damn thing cool, no matter what I put into it - new radiators, water pumps, etc. Second one I bought for $10 (the guy only charged me for the full tank of gas he put in it, gave me the car for free!) Suffered from the exact same maladies. Third and fourth ones I got for free as well, and they both overheated like mad. I tried my best to become adept at fixing these, but after a handful of years trying to overlook their mechanical woes while embracing their quirky coolness, I gave up. Several years later I gave it another shot with a '94 900 Commemorative Edition. It was cheap enough, so I figured they would have worked out the bugs since the 99 series. Woe be to me when it coughed up 2 alternators and overheated a dozen or so times in the 2 miserable months I owned it.

When I lived on the east coast I had a 1985 900 and it was a love hate relationship as well. Although my car never overheated, it was an electrical nightmere. I have to say I have never had more comfortable seats in my 900 though. The hatch was great and manual sunroof never leaked. I always wanted a 9000 too. I heard they were more of a pos than the 900's. Here is a few links in my area that seem like ok deals. Not affiliated just want to help out. GLWYS

Great cars!

I have had a '74 99, a '78 99 Turbo and an 87 900 Turbo. I bought the '78 new and the only corrective maintenance it needed in the 9 years I owned it was a water pump (easy to do). Big difference was the 99 did not have an intercooler whereas the 900 did plus the 900 had a 16v engine.

Of the three, I guess the 900 was the faster, more comfy car but I never had a complaint with the 99. Good Hunting!

I dunno, but I once heard from at least a couple of professional mechanics who claimed that owners of Saab's do just that...

They aren't a Mercedes, but they are really neat cars to own and drive.
