saabnet and saabcentral classifieds.
I had an 86 9K turbo 5spd years back, it was one of the most expensive re-hab's I've done on an old euro car, but it was quite rewarding. Saab did what they did very, very well, and to there own little drumbeat. If you are willing to travel I'm almost sure I saw one somewhere in Cali recently that was extremely nice, if that's feasible I'll try and track it down again, let me know.

You would probably be better opening your range to the 900. ( The 900 is a revamped 99 and has a longer nose. ) The 900 was made to 91 ish so parts are floating around however the supply is dwindling since SAAB cars is no more.

Even with all of that, you are really up for some punishment trying to keep it going due to parts availability. And this is coming from someone that had owned a auto repair shop for 10 years and has a engineering bent.

Manual trans SAABs break the pinion carrier in the transmission at high power levels, the auto trans cars are almost impossible to get parts for ( Borg Warner TB 35 to 84 ish, TB 37 then possibly some other trans after that. )

I've owned a 80 SAAB 900 ( non turbo auto trans ) since 85 and last year deemed the parts situation / rust too difficult to keep it as a daily driver for Mom and Dad so it now sits parked not to drive again.

The cars do make nice sounds with the timing chains against the fire wall and having all sorts of good stuff whirring away.

i'm pretty familiar w/ saab models from that era, and for now i will be focusing on a 99. since it will not be a daily driver (or even close) not really worried about the rigors of keeping it on the road as much.

I've been looking for the one I saw, I think I found it but the add was taken down. I'll keep it on my list, I always peek at 99's and Sonets and early 900's when I see em about.

Thumbs down Saab Story - Parts availablity really bad

We just got done working on a friend's 1976 Saab 900 EMS. While it's cute in a funky sort of way, the car definitely has some real quirks which make it unique. The turning radius is huge. They used "odd-ball" fastener sizes. There is not a lot of body insulation. This car was a 2 year only car. They didn't make many of them.

Saab went out of business... The car sales side of the business is gone and the parts availability is awful. Parts vendors simply don't stock, aren't going to stock, or can't get the part you need. You could always get a part made or substitute parts from other "like" part. But that's not necessarily going to get the car on the road any faster. Heaven help you if you really need something fast!

I had a turbo 99 manual and loved it. Nothing else like it; and did not want a 900 instead.

The 1968 to 1984 99 and 1978 to 1993 900 are for the most part the same car. The 900 got a slightly longer nose and different dash.

I'm pretty sure the 99 and 900 were not sold side by side in the USA with 79 being the first year for the 900.

I've had a now too rusty to continue 1980 900 since 86.
