How do I buy a body out there?

I have a wonderful 240D power train that may soon need to be transplanted because the body was rusting years before I got the car.

I need a clean, rust-free W123 body of any color to use as a transplant receiver.
Obviously, it will need a title.

Does anyone know if you can get a body with even a non-op title from a California yard? Or a scrap title? How about from Texas? I have a good interior and dash so lots may be transferred.

It would not matter to me if someone had a complete body without power train, it would all transfer. Obviously price changes as completeness of the dead car changes.

If I don't find one, I'd just do a lot of rust repair and make this the winter diesel.

Suggestions? ideas?

Vstech? Tyler? DAW? anybody?

Still have the 80 300D, not 100% rust free, but solid. Would be a shame to remove the drivetrain though as it runs well. BTW, I received your Private message about being ready around May to do something with it, but your private messages were full, and I could not respond.

There's still a running 240D in my garage. It just needs a new home and someone to drive and care for it.

I've got an almost PERFECT w123 300D NA with a seized engine. Comes with a clean title if you want to explore that option.

Here in TN, I'm pretty sure you could buy an entire body from a junkyard; however, I seriously doubt it would come with a title. I can make a call and find out for you though. Be right back.....Let me step outside and make the call.

EDIT (after the call): Called U-Pull-It. They will not sell the entire body.

You could get a body from a yard in Georgia or Kentucky, where the older cars are title exempt. There's a rust free wagon here in town for $700 that came from KY.

The problem I see is that Strelnik would end up with a car with no title. The title on my 1958 Ponton is the only thing that has kept it from being parted out.

I don't know about up there. Here, if you bring it a car from a state where "antique" cars aren't titled, you only need a notarized bill of sale from the owner to you and another bill of sale from the previous owner to him. The latter doesn't have to be notarized.

Hi
What is the law in North Carolina? I bought a 1970 BMW motorcycle frame from a guy in Greenville NC. He claimed he could get the title but after the exchange I have a frame but no title, He claims NC will not issue a title for a bike that old, but here in Ohio I need a title. What is the case down there?
thanks
dan

I did have that kind of problem in California coming from Rhode Island, but with the RI registration receipt and bill of sale they gave me a CA title without trouble.

Re title:

It's been a long time since I looked onto this, but the deal breaker is that the salvage yard has to notify the state that they are breaking the car. There is a waiting period to clear the title, to prevent stolen property from being salvaged. Once this hurdle is cleared, the title is either retired, or branded salvage, or both.

It is not an economical process to reverse.

If you can talk to the yard before they start the process, they are usually open to selling the entire car.

Jim

None of the local yards here have been willing to discuss with me. I'm sure they look at me and think "small potatoes", etc.

Darryl --- have you found a mostly rust free w123 body......yet????

Yes, They are looking at what they can get out of the car (scrap weight, parts sales), and that number is usually more than someone is willing to pay.
