71 Mercedes 300sel? Info

Central PA. My friend has a recycling yard and he just got in a big body 71, 6cylinder, auto on column. Deer hit, needs a little fender work and headlight on drivers side, missing grille. Body looks pretty great for the year, interior is nice, but has dry mold? from sitting in a garage since 91. He knew I was into odd stuff, so he called me down to look at it. This would be sweet with a turbodiesel transplant. Anyone interested, I will dig up any info I can to help. Last inspected in 91, in garage ever since. Shop receipt from 90 lists the car as having less then 90k miles. Not sure if this is true or not. Emblem missing off trunk, that's why I have ?? with the model. White with dark blue interior if my memory is working. No tears that I could see. Water-spotted wood up by windshield. Ideas or interest? Look me up. Thanks, Dan

Mercedes Benz 300SEL 6.3 | Grand Nostalgic
( full info at link )
"" Mercedes Benz 300SEL 6.3

Well it was inevitable I just had do a write up on one of the earliest AMG/performance Mercedes. It actually all started in 1966 as a private venture by an engineer Erich Waxenberger that worked at Mercedes.

The concept was simple, take the powerful 6.3 V8 quad cam engine from the luxury Mercedes 600 Limousine of the time and squeeze it into the W109 300SEL body. I say squeeze implying that the W109 300SEL is a small car, it really isn’t at five metres long with a width of 1.8 metres.

The end result was a impressive 2 tonne luxury saloon which had similar performance to dedicated sports cars of the era such as the Porsche 911S and the Jaguar E-type 4.2. It was able to do 0-62 in 6.3 seconds and would reach 100mph in 14.6 seconds. Mercedes known for being conservative, surprisingly launched the car for sale at the Geneva Motor Show in 1968. ""

It'll be interesting hooking up the air compressor to a Diesel engine. Castrating a W109's air suspension is sacrilege in some circles but parts alone to resurrect a neglected air suspension system is on the order of $5000. It's only value as a parts car might be the upgraded window and wood trim for a 280SEL.

I heard or read somewhere but I don't remember where that by '71 the 6cyl W109 300SEL had a 2.8 liter engine (M130?) in place of the 3 liter M189. Could have been a drunkard's rambling. IIRC there's no US '71 300SEL 6cyl so that might be a European delivery car.

correction and pics folks. 280se (trunk tag missing)

It's a 280se. I took lots of pics if anyone is interested. I think the body for the age is awesome. Headliner is 100%, no tears in seats. Wood looks solid, but some pieces need refinished. It was last inspected in 01, not 91. Only rust that I saw of concern is some in the wells of the trunk, and inside the front fenders. Someone needs this, to tinker with or for great parts. White exterior, green interior. Crank windows. All doors close with fingertips. My 85 doesn't close that nicely. Asking $650

Another "if I had the room" moment. That appears to be pretty restorable, at least to a driver standard. Does look like heavy bondo on the rear right fender though. Either way, neat! Good luck with the sale.

thanks man

I think that's some discoloration, I saw no bondo signs on the car. I looked under on the drivers side, what I could see of underneath looked good, with factory undercoat.
