The idle smoothener... the needle tip in the hayfield... the 38# legend... the 617 flywheel.
Basically, the flywheel that came with the OM617 manuals weighs 10 #s more than the OM616 one. The OM617 flywheel makes the engine behave more smoothly than the 616 -- but it is also very hard to find and expensive ($300-400).

OK. I get it. If you are just adding a turbo to a manny 300 the 617 flywheel is bigger, heavier and smoother than using the trans off a 240d.
Not to mention 20 hours less work and $1200 less parts. How much work is adding a turbo? There is so little information about 1980 mercedes work trucks, I used to see them all the time growing up, but they are not on the interweb. I had a thought that a turbo from one these might add some more balls to it without much fabrication needed. |
