1992 400E - needs upper harness. $1,100 obo. Los Angeles area.

This poor car needs a new home. It's got to go. It would be a bloody shame to part out a perfectly solid car like this.

Craigslist link: 1992 Mercedes 400E / E420

Cut & Paste:

1992 Mercedes 400E. This is my 84 year-old father's prior car with only 177,000 miles. It was very well maintained by a Mercedes specialist. Paint on the hood, roof, and trunk is very poor - the clear coat is bad. Has a "fixable" dent on passenger side fender and some other minor scrapes & dings.

Interior is light tan genuine leather (not vinyl) which is in surprisingly good condition with no rips, stains, or tears. (See pictures) NOTE: the drivers seat side bolster is NOT torn - there is a dark mark in the picture, but the leather is NOT ripped! The wood on the center console is good, with the exception of the lower section near the window switches. The dashboard is perfect - there are absolutely NO cracks at all. The the interior is very dusty & dirty, so it needs to be cleaned. The headliner is beginning to sag in the rear, but it's not too bad.

This car has been sitting un-used in their driveway, but was running & driving when parked about three years ago. Recent spark plugs, caps & rotors, but it needs a new battery and an upper wiring harness. (A common problem with these cars.) Other than that, the engine and transmission are very strong & mechanically excellent. The heating and Air Conditioning work well, as do all the other systems. One window regulator makes noise, but works properly. The factory radio works intermittently, so it should be replaced. The tires have lots of tread left. Overall, it's a good straight and solid rust-free California car.

That pretty much sums it all up - I've listed all that is good, and also all that is bad on this car. Come and take it away...

$1,100 or best *reasonable* offer.

Ba-Bump - up the list we go...

Updated craigslist link: 1992 Mercedes 400E / E420

OMG! I’m sick of the freaks, geeks, & dip*****s from CraigsList! The ignorant questions that I’m being asked are almost frighteningly beyond belief. The guy who left a deposit last week called and asked if I could finance him? Seriously? I’ve had everything except a Nigerian prince contact me.

Doesn’t SOMEONE here want this poor car? This needs to go to someone that will understand and appreciate what it is. Put it together and drive it as a beater, or give it to a new teenage driver? Use the chassis to replace a rust-bucket?

Part it out if you must, but that would be a shame. The 500E guys would want the metal oiler tubes and FGS trans valve body. Plus there are plenty of body & interior parts, electrical parts, catalysts, etc. And don’t forget the whole darn engine & trans are in perfect mechanical condition.

If I had the time, energy, & inclination (and a functional back), I’d fix it up myself. But there are also space constraints. This is the exact type of car I would have grabbed in my younger days.

OK. Rant over….

I sold a perfectly running 1995 E420 with around 120k in similar condition for $800. Buyer picked it up and drove it 8 hours home without a hitch.

These cars are either excellent and bringing top dollar, or you're giving them away. There's no in between.

Well, the "bump" of the thread got my attention (when I finally logged back in here).

Wolf: I thought that I had responded to your PM? No? I'll admit that I'm having difficulty keeping track of messages, and I apologize if I screwed up with communicating with you. Please let me know.

Car is still available. Other priorities & being laid up for a little while means that I haven't had time to deal with it lately. Plus I was inundated with unbelievably brainless responses from Craigslist people. Although I hesitate to call them people. I'm debating if they really are from the human species or not.

I haven't renewed the craigslist ad, and I will put it on ebay per someone's suggestion. Don't know why I didn't think of that earlier myself - DUH! I won't have time to list it or otherwise deal with it for a couple more weeks though. BUT if anyone here wants it before then, just let me know!

Do you have any pics you could post? I'm looking for a 400E.

It was a nice looking car as a driver when there were pics up. I'd call it average for a Mercedes, which is above average for most any other car it's age and mileage. I still haven't ruled it out myself but getting it home is a spendy proposition. I'm a little afraid of trying to get it to pass smog in CA frankly, if it and I were back east I'd have bought it in a heartbeat.

If I had the cash this moment I would have bought it today and had it shipped and got it sorted. But if it's still here by then I'll have the cash..

Well, I'm back....

I'm back, and bu-bumping this thread for a shameless plug: I (finally) listed the car on Ebay tonight.

If anyone on the forum is interested, I'll take less than the "buy it now" price in the listing; I'd like to see it go to a good home.

Here is the link: Mercedes Benz E Class 400E E420 W124 | eBay

Question

When I clicked on your Ebay listing I saw a bid for $750. Does the BIN price go away when someone makes a bid? Thx. DJ
