It's a lot easier to talk up a 240D, especially an AT one, than it is to drive one daily these days. Says the guy that drives 80's VW diesels daily still...

It's still a good looking car at a great price, the buyer pool is smaller and more picky now is all. And he's probly getting less annoying questions here than he would on Craigslist still. It'll find a home.

A lister diesel is amazingly reliable and unbreakable too, but i wouldnt want to merge on a highway in a car powered by one.

Its a nice car at a nice price, but its also the slowest possible 123 drivetrain combo. If it were 4 speed, it probably would have already sold.

Personally id put of pics showing every where that these cars rust if this car is really clean. Would be worth the time to demonstrate its as clean as advertised

I seem to be one of the few people left who would have no problem daily driving an automatic 240D. I daily drove one from 1998-2005 and again from 2008-2009.

If I weren't putting together my first 240D 4-speed at the moment, I'd certainly consider a car like this. Seems like it might be a bargain. I'm really just not in the market for another car.

I've commuted in a manual 240D and while I agree it's a little peppier than the auto the supposed advantage is overrated. The car looks good for the price but it all depends on the state of the engine. If the compressions good and it's not laying a severe smoke screen it may well be worth it. If not you are looking at a lot of expensive engine work which kills the apparently great deal right off the bat. The smoking issue is relevant to me as Phoenix has the strictest emissions requirements in the nation. Diesels require emissions every year and every car post 1966 requires them. So other parts of the country may be able to get away with smokey engines (California ads regularly talk up not having to emission older cars) but that's worthless to me.

Tim,
I suspect this is more a case of touchy-feely, versus having to go to the expense of fetching or shipping the car and being disappointed. Also, TXJake makes a great point about rust on a car from the 'rustbelt.' EVERY W123 240D we bought new and owned in Nebraska was on it's way to developing rust far sooner than 200K and 10-years old. Not one escaped it. Not saying the car wasn't worth it's original price, but some cars need to be inspected in-person. Just my .02.

Yes, I have had the motor mounts replaced and the car shuts off now, along with a more thorough once over.

Idle is smoother, but not as good as these can get. I imagine leaking injector seals and old injectors are the major contributor. Drives just fine now.

The only major leak was coming from the transmission pan gasket. Leaks enough to leave more than a drip when it sits overnight. That will be replaced and the tranny serviced. Otherwise roadworthy as it sits.

Once that's done, craigslist it goes.

The car has not been a priority... still sitting in the back lot. I had someone local offer $2000 for it with the small laundry list fixed. If he shows up in person tomorrow it may be sold.

Aint the truth. I've had an "interesting" experience to put it mildly these last couple of weeks trying to buy a car and was sorely tempted to fly to Wichita. But it just wasn't feasible. Pity. Whoever get's that car will probably have a smoking deal. (Smoking in a good way of course. not in a laying a smoke screen behind him kind of way )

One of the cars I tested was an auto 240D. I have to say it left me jaded as to the whole concept of an auto tranny in one of these. But I think it had issues and I'd really like to have the opportunity to be able to test a good one though to get a fair comparison with my old manual one.

Very nice example of a w123! Around here the issue with W123 is rust......its just too much work to stop them from rusting in our horrid salt zone.

I've driven an auto and manual 240d, they aren't that bad, maybe people are just impatient. Although highway merges can be interesting...my 190d 2.2 is also super slow, its fun in its own way. I routinely alternate between 238hp and 72hp. Keeps things interesting.

If I was closer I'd be drooling on this one but I already have too many cars.

You guys ready for a laugh?

I had 4 vehicles going to the Mecum classic car auction in Kansas City. The agent told me if I added one more vehicle, it would be free to enter. Guess which one is going in?

The real laugh was where they placed it. Star feature running Saturday at 5:30 PM on live TV. They chose it over the 380SL and the 560SEL I'm sending there. I thought to call and switch it, but thought you all would enjoy the action. The other 2 benzes run just before TV coverage starts.

The other two going on television are the '66 Imperial and '61 Beetle.
