Where to find used MBs?
Hi everybody,
I just registered here today since I think I'll be frequenting these forums regularly in the future. I'm on the look out for a used MB. Currently in the marked for W126s, especially the SECs which always has had an appeal to me. But I am not totally stuck there. Considering the SELs too. Can anyone give me some good pointers to used car websites? Also if any members here have tips and hint on what to be aware of, and look out for on the W126s, that would be helpful to. Did the different 380/420?/500/560SECs have much different standard/optional equipment when delivered here in the states? I know in Europe there were some differences.

Welcome OJ,
Besides your local newspaper and dealers, on the web you can check e-Bay, Auto Trader, Hemmings Motor News, Roy Fields and of course the cars for sale link on this forum. There's also L.R. Spencer Company... I'm sure others will have some to add. Forgot to mention MBNZ.org, decent classifieds section. Records, records and records! Very important when purchasing a pre-owned MB! Also, have it checked over by a qualified MB mechanic. Things to watch for is A/C system (eg evaporator) -- expensive to repair. Timing chain and upper rails should be replaced around 100k miles (esp. 420 SEL). On the 560SEL, nitrogen spheres or rear shocks might need to be replaced at 100k miles. There are more, so try a search, but I hit the main points. Also, the Unofficial W126 page has good W126 info! Good luck! Last edited by BlackE55; 04-08-2002 at 05:35 PM. |

Where to look...
Welcome! I'd recommend you join the MBCA if only for their magazine The Star, which has a classified section offering many "better" cars. Many local chapters also offer classifieds (gws-mbca.com is the DC section...you may want to take a look). Collectorcartrader online is a good source...I've found that most of the listings in Hemmings are either on the exotic or expensive sides, with the exception of Paul Padgett who specializes in "daily drivers"...think he's in Cincinnati. Lastly, I'd get a copy of Frank Barrett's "Mercedes-Benz Buyer's Guide" (under $20 in paperback). This book has a ton of practical info on what to look for/look out for in most models, as well as good technical history.
Good luck! |

Thank you everybody! The links and suggestions have been most helpful. Hopefully I'll be able to find a reasonable priced SEC project. Something I can spend some time and TLC to turn into a nice vehicle to keep for many years.

MBZ car source
Amuso,
Since you're not that far away from L.A. check out this site and be aware that it changes almost everyday. www.recycler.com I think you'll find all the MBZs you'll need. Ben |
