Unfortunately it was a no-go. He wanted $1000 cash and my W140. It was a nice car, but I feel not $1000 nicer. At least it had cold a/c and no check engine light on. I don't know, maybe since it was a nice '85 W123, it would be worth it, but I don't know.
I really boggles my mind that this car is not worth $2450 to someone needing a good running car. I see junk selling for way more. I rode in the back seat today while that couple test drove it. I had never set on the back seat or rode in it. I was amazed how comfortable this car was... it was like I was in a limo. This car is worth may more than I am asking. I think I will just keep it - may start myself a luxury taxi service. Last edited by 86560SEL; 08-23-2014 at 10:27 PM. |

Sounds to me like the guy with the older car was being generous in his offer. No AC in your car in the month of August in Georgia, as a luxury taxi? I'm not so sure about that one... What are all the issues with your car? |

Agreed. Fix the ac and check engine, raise the price to $3995. The phone will ring. It's either perfect or you' give it away. Only a few fools like us buy cars with problems, and we're cheap sobs.

Is that a Pontiac wagon in the background? Or a Woodsman Estate or something like that?

Well I think the car is sold. A guy from Georgia is supposed to buy it this week. I came down to a lousy $2300. Makes me sick considering I paid $3300 for it and spent over $500 on it over the past year general maintenance. $1500 is change to some rich folk on here, but it is a lot of money to me, lol. I feel it is worth more, but oh well. Lesson learned. My last W140. Never again.
IF something happens and he backs out, I am taking it next week to get the A/C repaired and have the CEL issue addressed and raise the price accordingly, but I am sure someone out there will still expect to get it for $2500. Quote:

I guess it depends on where you live. I guess if I were up north it wouldn't be a big deal. You know back in the 80s and years before that, many cars didn't even come with A/C. It was optional and many from the northern USA and Canada didn't even order it - even on luxury cars. Check engine light - well to be honest if it weren't for me no one would evne know it was on. lol. I had just noticed one day that it wasn't coming on when the ignition was turned on so I had my mechanic pull the cluster and check it - turns out the wrong bulb was in there - he replaced it - reset codes and light popped on a week later. Most people wouldn't have even noticed and since the car runs perfect, no one would have suspected a thing. If I was dishonest, I could take the bulb back out, or reset it just before I sold it, but I don't work like that and an honest person, so I would never do that... I wouldn't want someone doing it to me - though I am sure many out there would. Honesty usually gets you somewhere - in this case it has my giving my car away. lol. Quote:

Saw the 'Safari' Pontiac reference.....
Mom and Dad had a 1960 Pontiac Safari wagon. Big V8 in it. Great car to pull our 14' runabout boat on vacation in. Room for our family of 6 and our dog Augie!

Augie doggie, and doggie Daddy. Doggie Daddy was always instructing his son Augie by saying; "my son my son......"
Late '50s to early '60s ?Warner Bros./Hanna Barberra? cartoon on TV that's the one. Our Pontiac Safari was either a 389 c.i. 2bbl carb, or a 400 c.i. It was the base model. Dad was into Oldsmobiles and Pontiacs through the '50s-'60s until he discovered the MB 220D in 1969. Last edited by Skid Row Joe; 08-29-2014 at 02:33 AM. |

FWIW re the Code 26, it is a common and well known problem, not worth fixing. I've had one in my wagon for several years. Does not/not affect driveability in any way, other than improving it. Ask someone who was a dealer tech in the mid to late 90s how many came back because the transmission "isn't shifting correctly".
No knowledgeable buyer will be turned off by that. Suggest any concerns be vetted with a shop specializing in older Benzes. Now that other code might be a deal breaker for buyers in states w strict emission regs.

Thanks for that info. Yeah, the car runs perfect. It is just trying to convince people that. I mean people hear check engine light and panic. I mean the wrong bulb was in before and the light was not even coming on at all... Lord knows for how long. It was me that wanted it to work. I shouldn't have told my mechanic to change the bulb. I don't remember what that code 26 was... that may be the one you are referring to. I know one code was EGR vacuum leak and the other one was cold upshift delay or something like that, but I cannot tell anything is wrong and when cold the car does wait a little longer to shift which seems like it is normal to me. On these older cars, I think these CEL lights are a waste for the most part and comes on for things that make no difference. I wonder if the light didn't come on at all if states with the regulation would make them fix the light, had it not been working?
The A/C seems to be the big deal breaker for most, but you know back when the A/C was working when I first had it for sale, still wasn't much interest in it when I had it priced for $3000. People want everything working and get it for nothing... want their cake and eat it too so to speak. It is not a new car, needs some TLC and priced as such. If it was mint and everything was working, it would be $10500, not $2500. At any rate, the guy definitely wants it since I priced it for $2300, but had to wait until he got the money for something he sold and said it may be two weeks. I don't know, getting a little frustrated over it. Oh well. Quote:
